I agree with everything except for the completists being valuable customers. They're morons. I don't need or want to buy every cover to IDW Transformers series because it's a waste. A waste of my money, trees, and most importantly my time. IMHO completionists are part of problem they buy every stupid variant cover because they're run won't be complete without it and they can't brag at their LCS or show pictures of their set or boast on online of having their full run of whatever with every variant cover so they can stroke their own stupid ego and show how patheic and empty their lives are. When I was one a long time ago I was miserable. Now that I found that I didn't need a complete set of anything to make me happy, I'm able to enjoy my life more.
I don't have every single issue of every single Transformers comic book issues, trade paper backs, and hardcovers ever produced from the franchise's 25+ years from Marvel US, Marvel UK, Blackthorne, Dreamwave, IDW, Titan, and Japanese manga publishers.
It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Peter David but other than Aquaman, Young Justice, and the 20 issue DC run of The Fallen Angel are the only complete sets of his work that I still have. I'm missing huge chunks out of his run on The Incredible Hulk and IDW run of The Fallen Angel, I'm still missing an issue or two out of his run on Supergirl and the current X-Factor series and these are Showcase prequel issues (which was reprinted in the TPB) and Supergirl Annual #1 (which wasn't part of the continuity) and X-Factor: Quicksilver and X-Factor: Layla Miller specials (both them were reprinted in TPBs).
I learned a long time ago that I would never have every Transformer comic, or every single issue of every book that Peter David wrote or every book that Jim Starlin wrote and/or drew, or run of every Valiant, Ultraverse, Wildstorm, or Image comic book every produced. And you know what? I'm honestly FINE with that.
I'm at a point in my life now where I don't need to have every Transformers (or any other character/brand), every comic produced by a certain company and/or imprint, and/or creator to make me happy.

It used to be the only thing you had to do to be a completest back in the day was to keep picking up the next issue. And you could count on it, there would only be one version of it. Hell, you could have 100 issues come out and there would only be 100 comics. Today those same 100 issues would amount to about 418 comics.
You can't be a completest if you can't complete.
That's how you frustrate loyal completest.

In December IDW will re-number The Transformers ongoing series from #31 to #125 because of this shit, but I can't blame IDW because these morons are just fucking stupid. They believe that they can't live happy lives without owning every fucking stupid varient cover. IDW is a company and they are in the business of making money and as long as these fucking morons are willing to buy this shit, IDW will make books with 80+ covers. The same with Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Boom, Dynamite, Image, and the rest.

In today's market, they would be morons. If it was your favorite comic and you were buying every issues and roughing the storms when they didn't depict what you want to see, then there is a sense of pride to be had. When IDW prints 80 VARIANTS AND PEOPLE TRY TO GET AS MANY AS POSSIBLE... HELL NO. Caps lock was an accident, but I'm leaving it. df1

Is having 5 - 8 covers REALLY working better than having 1 cover and a good story and art? The sales number of today with all the numbers combined for ALL covers would be cancellation numbers for comics of one cover from years ago. The sales ARE down. It's NOT making them a bunch of money. The numbers keep going down and we get spoon-fed the same bullshit over and over. Multiple covers aren't THE problem, it's just another ingredient of all the problems plaguing the industry. It's another sign that the people at the top don't get what they are seeing. The formula they follow doesn't work and yet they are too dumb to figure that out. All those companies are in the business of making money and can't understand dwindling sales numbers when they see it and they keep doing the same dumb shit over and over. I don't think it's the fans are buying this shit. I really don't think they are. The morons aren't the fans, it's the people in charge of making comics. They're inept at running comic companies.

I do not pay attention to varient covers unless they are equal release and the same price. THen I will buy the one I like more. All of those other ones I ignore. I am not the market for those things. Bob over at Fantasy Escape sells the hell out of them. He cannot stand them either but he's like hey if they will pay for them, I will keep selling them for $25 on average.
But, you are right that the people at the top are inept and have the wrong approach to runnning a comic company which is because now they are trying very hard to tie the various components of their multi media empire together to increase sales. That and just straight up fucking over the dwindling customer base with putting popular characters in 20 comics and so on. ITs very annoying.

The numbers keep going down and we get spoon-fed the same bullshit over and over. IDW came up with this idea for Godzilla: King of the Monsters #1 if a store orders at least 500 copies they would get a special variant of Godzilla's foot smashing their store and the store's sign/logo would be shown and at least 80 stores agreed to it (including the LCS that I go to). The plus is that they got a more orders for it, the downside is that I think a lot of stores will get stuck with a ton of these books that will just wind up in the junk box. Hell I went to another store and they had a short box on the counter next to cash register filled with a bunch of worthless Marvel varients for $1 (or maybe it was $5) per book because NO ONE wanted the damn things.
