I like when stores put the first comic in a bag and board. It lets me see what is there and prevents bending of the books behind it.
The new 52 books are hit and miss. Action, Batman, Wonder Woman and Flash are all well done. Superman is pretty good also. Animal Man and Swamp Thing are actually really excellent. Sure the art in Animal Man was distracting at first, but it really fits the story. Plus I am partial to horror.
Justice League, Teen Titans and Red Hood and OMAC, did nothing for me. At all. The new Batman Inc #1 was really good also. Honestly, Capullo and Snyder have simply been working magic on Batman. that book is fantastic. Snyder has flipped all of the preconceived beliefs of Batman onto its ear and succeeded with every issue.
As for comic shops. Like Comic Kings which is pictured. Expandable card games are ubiquitous with comics now. Plus how can you get upset at a shop owner promoting it. They make thousands of dollars from the cards each month. Fantasy Escape does about 5000 a month from them. All of those people that are sitting there in that pic, they spend an average of $20 apiece while they are there. Some spend a hundred or more. And there are months, when cards sell more revenue than Comics.
It sucks when you go there and want to quietly look through some back issues, but that is why you read the bulliten board, and find out what days that stuff is happening on and avoid those days. For example, go to the comic shop on a Tuesday to look through back issues. That is universally the slowest day of the week.

Saw the Amazing Spider-Man (2012) movie.
It seems evident that retelling his origin was done for the sole purpose of injecting more drama and dialogue and less special effects. The entire movie centers around Oscorp, so it looks like we are destined to see the Green Goblin again sooner than I'd like. I wasn't real pleased with anything about the movie. Peter Parker is reduced to more of a fuck-up than anything else. The casting was tolerable. Where this story loses it is all in the crappy screenplay. Aunt May looks nothing like Aunt May and serves little purpose. Uncle Ben comes off as a dumb ass. This movie perpetuates a series of cliche ending with some dreaded device on a rooftop threatening the the city. Once again someone must make it to the building and stop the device. Spider-man repeatedly runs around without his mask. It's like they do this so the star can show his face and you know it's him. The Lizard isn't well rendered. I thought he'd be the highlight of the movie. There was no highlight. I thought the movie was looking lame. I rate it lower than I thought I would giving it a 4 out of 10. This is easily the worst movie in the series despite some technology improvements. Some of the climbing and jumping scenes were very well done.
I'm ready for a new hero to be shown. I look forward to an Antman movie. I'd like to see Luke Cage. I'd like to see Dr. Strange based upon the Ditko stuff.

This is my first comic related purchase in awhile. I had honestly been looking for these exact color guides for over a year. Last week I randomly clicked on someone's eBay auctions and they had them. I do not own an eBay account, so there were logistical issues on getting them, but here they are finally in my hands. Defenders #89 page 19 color guide Defenders #89 page 20 color guide These are two pages that always amused me. Hulk's fondness of beans was always funny to me. I think it started in Hulk #182. df1

I think it is cool you bought something comic related. Sometimes it just takes one item to get the ball rolling again. And maybe we don't need to get back to the way we used to be. Maybe we just need a new direction when it comes to how we participate in comic collecting. I have a good idea of how I want to be once I am able to. But its going to be a long time before I can start getting there. But once I can, I have a plan on what area I want to attack and how I want to go about it. And it'll be quite different than how I've gone about things in the past. I'm looking forward to it.
I'm amused this piece is what brought you back. I can understand wanting it and all, but what made you actively seek this one out over all others? I understand the beans deal, but still I would wonder if this was just one of many pieces you had an interest in and this one showed up right place, right time, right price first. Or was this truly the only piece you wanted? If so, I'd be curious what more besides the beans angle would be behind this?

This didn't bring me back. I have no interest in most color guides, but these are cheap and I like the exploration of what characters do in their down time. I specifically wanted these in color guides format because of the subject matter, the cheap price, and the fact the art isn't that great. Not enough that I'd want to pay the escalated price for the real art pages. These have the lettering on them and I'd actually frame these whereas I wouldn't consider framing 99% of the comic art I buy. I feel like the whole deal with the beans is a good culmination of Hulk's obsession with beans. He talked about them quite a bit and always made a big deal about them. I like the whole fact that no one would even attempt to talk him out of buying beans, not even the store manager who accepted the lesser payment.
I seriously looked for these for over a year. Finding them was random luck. But no, I wasn't looking for anything else. I'm not thinking this is the start of buying stuff again. I was just buying something I'd intended to buy when I was collecting.

On a side note, I've been informed that my copy of "Is This Tomorrow?" is a Windy City pedigree copy. It can be identified by the writing on the cover. I did not know the history of the book when I bought it. "Is This Tomorrow?" is an anti-communism propaganda comic. I thought it was cool and grabbed it because of the unusual subject matter.

If certain things align and go the way I want, my board will be put back online next week. Unfortunately, even if I do put it back online, it's not guaranteed to stay.

If certain things align and go the way I want, my board will be put back online next week. Unfortunately, even if I do put it back online, it's not guaranteed to stay. df1 I always think it is good any time you have your site up. I have taken my site down twice since I've had it and I end up missing it. I know your reasons are much different than mine but I get to feeling like the board is a failure and just shut it down to regroup my feelings about it. And then I realize that over time, there is enough here to warrant staying open. That sometimes people come and go and people make contributions and stay away a long time and its the body of work that I'm more proud of than just where it is at at the moment. I think my perspective of it is just leave it open and it's there when I want it to be and when I'm not paying attention to it, it's open for others should they want to post something. I know you have your own levels and benchmarks of what you want and don't want and you make your decisions on your own and your own objectives are what count, but I always considered your board a success and I'm sure once you reopen, you will have your same regulars return. Sometimes its good to shut down just to have a filtering/refocusing. I don't know. Sometimes it is good. But I always prefer your board being open as opposed to being shut down. I've always considered your board like a sister board of mine. Maybe you don't see it that way but I opened under your suggestion and I've aligned my thoughts with some things you say. Not all of them, but a lot of them. I feel whet's board is also a slight extension of mine too in a different aspect. His site appeals to the speculator in me that has always been there for me. So in some ways I feel a triangle affect. And in some ways, I feel like a slight spinoff to Valiantfans.com because I left there just after creating this board. But I do not align myself with their members and what has gone on there for a long time now. There are really not a lot of boards I would frequent these days but the ones I do are remain loyal to and I'd be happy when you reopen. I think its always worthy of being open because the alternatives in most cases are not something I want to frequent. Good luck with it and I hope you enjoy keeping it open.

Saw the movie Argo. Ben Affleck has really matured as an actor. I liked it. My only complaint is their effort to make every potential conflict a tense moment only to have it to not be anything at all. The story is about the Iranian hostages in the early 80's. I remember this dominating the news, but in all honesty, I didn't know what motivated it. Now I know and it makes more sense. I expected the role of Jack Kirby to be bigger. the plot involves the CIA creating a fake Canadian movie production as a backdrop to smuggle out 6 hostages that were being sheltered by a Canadian diplomat in Iran. Affleck was a CIA operative leading the mission. Jack Kirby was evidently the storyboard artist and the actor looked nothing like him. The storyboards had a more prominent role in the movie than he did and the storyboards didn't even remotely resemble Kirby's art. Despite the contrived and unnecessary building of conflict and Jack Kirby's role not being a very good refelection of the man, those were my only complaints. I'd give it an 8 out or 10.
