Sounds cool.... Are there any Grails or Key issues? Are Undergrounds divided into eras like Silver, Bronze, Gold, Copper, etc? And what about today? Are Undergrounds still alive and thriving or are they mostly a thing of the past? (Trying to get a mini education as much as I can here). plenty of books that would be considered grails. There's a really good list of these on another board, in a second I will copy it and post it here. Hmmm, not really ages, there's a few books that are almost considered "pre-Undergrounds", stuff with an underground vibe that came out before Zap #1. Zap #1 is really the book that started the undergrounds. I think some people would end the "golden age" of undergrounds in the early 70's, like around '73 or so. There were later undergrounds, and undergrounds also kind of spun out to become what we now call "indepedent" comics. Mini-comix became a big thing, there was quite a few of them in the 70's, but there was also a group of creators who started to work mainly in mini's throughout the 80's. There's also the later wave of underground guys, although they are often mixed in with the "independent comics" guys. Are undergrounds still alive? I think so, though again, the line between underground and "indepedent" isn't always so easy to judge. Some of the companies that got their start in the underground days are still in business. Also, any time one of the old underground creators comes out with something new, I would consider their work an underground.

I think if you have been collecting awhile, everyone is familar at least a bit with Zap #1. What do I know about it? Very little. Crumb, can picture the cover without looking for a picture and I believe many different printings.
That is where I am most worried. I would love to have a Zap #1. But, I would be the easiest one in the world to rip off on it. I have never even seen a Zap #1 except reprinted in some form. What identifies one print from another? What are the tell-tale signs? I know I could get the book, but unless I start buying heavily or a I find one dirt cheap.
Is there a good reference website that identifies stuff like this pretty well?
I know I am asking a lot out of you, but I know you have a good knowledge on it and sometimes I run across a few books and just dont know what I am looking at. Just enough to be dangerous.
Is there company's (like Marvel as an example) that when you see their logo, its a solid pick to get as legit and worthy of a collection?
I already feel a little smarter than I was. Undergrounds and Obscure is one of my weakest areas in comics. But I suppose it is that way for a lot of people.

Yep, here it is: www.ugcomix.info/hub.htmlThere were different publishers, but the creators tended to move around a lot, so a lot of the books are similar even if published by different publishers. Rip Off Press, Kitchen Sink and Last Gasp are the big ones.

It was a party at my mailbox today...three packages. I got a bunch of undergrounds in the mail. There were so many at one time, I decided to mark the occasion with a picture: I am most proud of the Ghost Mother, that is an extremely rare underground that I have been trying to get for a long while. Also impressive is the Choice Meats #1 which is a first printing. In all my years of collecting undergrounds, this is the first time I've seen a first print for sale. I was surprised it didn't go for more. The Tales from the Plague at the top features work by Richard Corben.

That's what I'm talking about J!!! Thanks for the contribution! I think the more exposure to this type of stuff the better and the more likely I can gain at least a tab bit of familiarity and reference. Although I can honestly say I don't know what I am looking at here, I find myself most interested in owning "Fits" and "Choice Meats Comics" While I was at the show yesterday, I let "Undergrounds" cross my mind while I was looking around and vowed to take a good hard look and possibly make a purchase if proper book and priced right was found, but sadly....I seen none.
