(stolen from Comicspriceguide underground forum)
Tier One KEYS: The GA of UG Comix.
Generally pre-1969
Generally >$1000/book
The pioneers of the UG movement
Zap Comix #1, 1st print (Plymell printing).
Zap Comix #1, 2nd (Donahue printing)
Snatch Comics #1
Zap Comix #0, 1st print
Gothic Blimp Works #1
Feds N Heads
Lenny of Laredo
God Nose
Adventures of Jesus
Bottomline: These are important books and rarities that were often distributed only to friends. As most were hand-assembled and stapled, folded into jeans pockets, etc., high grade copies are sought after and very expensive. It is downright amazing issues remain in this condition. Perhaps, like me, you’re saddened to learn that you are already priced out of many of THE most influential and seminal comix. But fear not, I believe there are other key books in the UG fold that would compliment any collection.

Tier Two KEYS: Other VERY noteworthy books, from the UG’s Silver Age.
Generally 1967-1972
Generally >$100 - 750/book
Generally a core group of UG Artists (e.g. Crumb, Shelton, Kitchen, S. Clay Wilson, etc.)
American Splendor #1 Bijou Funnies #1 Freak Brothers #1 Freak Brothers #2 Mom’s Homemade Comics #1, 49-cent cvr Mr. Natural #1 Douglas Comics (Hey keed, wanna buy a Douglas? Spiegelman cvr) Yarrowstalks #3 Gothic Blimp Works #2-8 Zap Comix #2 Zap Comix #3 Jiz Comics Head Comix Fritz the Cat
Bottomline: Every collector of UGs should hold one or two books from this list. Overtime, one might be able to find these beauties for approximately ½ Weist (2000), which if comix are still a developing market should prove a sound investment. Note that with this list, outright “rarity” plays less of a role- rather, this list represents core UG titles and talent.

Note from me: Also, a comic called "Tales from the Ozone #1" should also be included in this list. It can go for close to $1,000 in high grade. I picked up a lower grade copy at a comic shop for $40, a great find!

I have seen pictures of quite a few of these before. So, many of the title names, I recognize. And even a few by remembering their covers to a small degree. A few, not all. But these names are not unfamilar. The thing is, I never see these anywhere. At least in person. When I do find Undergrounds, its always titles that either no one cares about or dont have much clout. I remember seeing a box of Cherry Poptarts a long time ago.
Is there a list of promising books in the $1 - $100 range? You know...books that are priced low but probably had more than a few reasons to go up?

I've got a few issues of Cherry Poptart, the later issues are just called Cherry because the people who made Poptarts didn't want that name used for a porno comic, I guess. I'd like to eventually put together a complete set of first printings together, just have to find them at a good price.
A great book to get at a reasonable price (usually around $20) is one I recommended on Lyria before. It's called "The People's Comics". It's a Crumb book, it features early Harvey Pekar work and also includes the death of Fritz the Cat, who gets stabbed in the head with an icepick for having too much of an ego and being a little too unfriendly to the wrong female! I believe Crumb actually killed off the character because he was a little POed about the Fritz the Cat movie, so he just did away with the character. If you wanted one, Don Donahue usually sells them on eBay and you are guaranteed to get a first print, HIGH grade copy from Don. His user name on eBay is apexnovelties. If anyone is ever serious about getting into undergrounds, I would definitely start with him as a source.

Thanks for that. Some of that stuff I wouldnt mind having at all. I like having a very diverse collection. I dont want to be tied down to one character, group, company, genre, era. I like having a little bit of everything. One thing I really do not have any of is Undergrounds. I wouldnt like to have a heavy collection. But, I wouldnt mind maybe 1 day having at least a box. That would be about the right amount for me. Just enough to say I have some. And it would be more than a couple.

Bro J. Now that you're back in the area. I know of three stores that deal in undergrounds. Two in the Bethlehem area and one in the Philly area. Up for some hunting???
