The hole made sense. In the comic he always had to wear the top half of the armor. Preposterous I say. The suit is big and heavy and couldn't be hidden. The hole wasa small insert for an electormagnet. Which BTW was used to keep metal shrapnel away from his damaged heart. Just like the comics. It also gave him a physical weakness and gave motivation to the villain. Free unlimited energy could be worth killing your genius partner over. Easily one of the best hero flicks ever. 4.5/5 In the comic, Tony still had a weak heart. There wasn't an open hole. I liked the way the comic was done. I thought the movie took things too far. Most people I know thought that seen was the worst part of the movie. I've got a lot of the Iron Man comics. Even a TOS #40. Defiant1

All I can say is look at when it was created. Stan had Zero scientific understanding when he wrote this stuff. That is why everyone is powered through Radiation. So If you come forward and put some scientific thought into the reasoning for something, you would come to the conclusion that a housing would be needed for the device to operate in the capacity it is intended to. I think her hand went a bit to deep into it. It should have been more like a cup, with the wire coming through it.
In IM2 it looks like there is something happening in that area of his chest. Hopefully it will push the character in the direction of Warren Ellis's EXTREMIS storyline.
