Have we become a society that is no longer capable of listening to a 6 minute or above song? You certainly appreciate the fact that an 11 minute song is an extreme risk, but you also have to remember that some of the best songs seem to have not been tied down to time constraints. MTV shouldn't be part of the equation anymore. I even long for the days when they actually played videos and had MTV VJ's. No longer in existence it seems and no signs video will make a come back. As videos progressed from the 60s to finally come to mainstream in the 80s, it seems we have regressed back to no need for videos today. True, I wouldn't be into seeing a bunch of soul and hip-hop videos anyway. But if you brought back videos like they were in the 80s, I'd be flipping channels and watching from time to time. A real video channel would be cool. I'd get to see what a band looks like. I guess youtube is replacing that. I couldn't care less about youtube videos of somebody skateboarding and busting their nuts because they did something stupid. I will go look up a band to see live tracks I've never heard before. Music isn't the only thing that has changed. Watch an old movie from the 40's. Watch the 50's & 60's TV shows on the retro channel if you get that. Everything is paced much slower. Drama actually unfolds. We're getting older. MTV just sped things along. The internet and cell phones were a byproduct of people wanting instant results. Defiant1

Yeah, its true. Some things are certainly better, like movies in most cases. I don't need a movie to be drawn out to get it's point across. I just need to be entertained. Music on the other hand doesn't have to end when it's sound good. In fact, when it is sounding really good, I sometimes hate it when it does end.
Youtube has been great to go back and find old videos and songs from bands and videos I had forgotten about or hadn't seen in forever. Even has allowed me to see a lot of footage I've personally never seen before. I can handle a few joke clips on Youtube, but I never actually go there for that. For me, its usually music, to look up an event, or to learn something. It's been great at helping me learn things. You can almost put in just about any topic of anything you wanna learn about and it usually has something. Gotta love that!
Back to music. I don't want it to seem that music has to be long in order to be good. Or what is missing is music is long. That's not really the point of the thread. To me the point is, Rock is missing jamming. Just straight out smash-mouth rocking. Shredding, ripping, crunching. It just seems to be replaced by cute lyrics with background vocals and harmonies, with background melodic guitars giving it enough to be labeled rock. When at it's underbelly, take the guitars out and you have a lot of ballads or pop songs. Shit, I'm, even hearing a few songs on my local radio sounding a bit like country. I have to say I've generally always liked music from every era. But I feel the last 4-8 years has been some of the worst music of my life. I have to go back to about 2002 to remember when bands were still really rocking in good supply. It seems if a new song is getting airplay today on a rock station, it sounds like some wimps who know a few bar chords. Don't ask them to play any intricate solos or heavy riffs. They might not look cute playing stuff like that.

While I was traveling to and from Charlotte, I went through a 150 mile area roughly where I found a great radio station. It was called 96Rock. It was 96.1. It's kinda funny because we have a station down here that is mostly Alternative and some heavy regular Rock called 96X also on 96.1. Anyway, they were pretty kick ass. Seemed to be centered around the Raleigh/Durham NC area. They were have a Rock A-Z deal. No, not like a rock countdown. You know, even like 500 song countdowns are subjective and sometimes you dont agree with them. This wasn't a countdown. This was a going through of their library from A-Z. I had them like 3 hrs each way and it was like they went from like the letters Il- In on the way up and Li - Lo on the way back. I mean the list barely moved the whole time I listened. And the songs were kick ass. Plenty of rocking and a lot of songs I hadn't heard of in forever and others I never heard of before.
Being this was a list kind of thing, it made me wonder how they were when they didn't have a list. Towards the end of when I was traveling back, around midnight, they broke away from the list and did a regularly scheduled segment of rock. Once again, compared to where I live, it was kick ass.
I wonder if they kick ass on a daily basis, or did I just get lucky? Either way, both times when the signal finally faded out, I was upset.

Too slow for me. I don't smoke pot, but that music makes me feel like I should. I do like the site though. They list my favorite band The Dreaming as well as all the rare tracks and a mix of Beautiful that I'd never heard from the Elektra soundtrack. df1

I don't get the feeling of needing to smoke pot to these guys at all.

Strange though that my firefox plugin says the files have an MPEG suffix instead of MP3. Not secure. I can download the songs for free. Thanks df1

Only thing I can say is.. times have changed and so has music. Music always changes and I typically love each progression it evolves into. Just not this latest rendition.

Only thing I can say is.. times have changed and so has music. A lot of stuff that is popular now is similar to stuff that was available 20 years ago. It just wasn't popular back then. A band like the Ramones had little or no commercial success, but if you look at the 90's, it was like they inspired every other alternative band out there. I know too many musicians that are more talented than the band above. I've seen too many. I used to look in awe at some of the live INXS footage with them playing sold out stadiums. When I saw them, the neck of the guitarist's guitar was 2 inches from my fingers and when he hung over the crowd his sweat was dripping in my hair. Kinda gross, but 100's of thousands of people would have paid to swap places with me and experience that years later. Chatted with Michael Hutchence after the show and had him sign a t-shirt for a girl I knew. Most of these metal band that just scream will be forgotten in five years. I've seen hundreds of them. I won't say I regret anything, but if I had my way, I would've gotten over the male angst that made me like heavy metal about 6 years earlier if I had it to relive. By the time I saw Metallica in the snakepit at the Omni listening to James call the male fans queers and the females fans whores, I realized I was outgrowing most metal. I had a backstage pass to see them that night and said screw it. I went to work that night and didn't feel like I missed anything. defiant1
