Spider-Man A.K.A. real life persona Peter Parker 1st Appearance: Amazing Fantasy #15 August 1962 Decent Website: spidermancrawlspace.com/Another Decent Website: www.angelfire.com/ca/Entertaining/index.htmlOpinion (of thread creator only) Who else means more to Marvel than Spiderman? X-Men? Maybe...but they havent been as popular for nearly as long as Spiderman. Fantastic Four? Well, they are the flagship title, but no, I dont think they come close either. I dont think any character has meant so much to Marvel for so long and so consistently as Spiderman. Almost from the moment he was bitten by that Scientifically Altered Spider, he has taken the world by storm. Once again a multi-movie appearance lead character and quite a loyal fan following, Spiderman has made fans happy with excitement for what's next or angry and demanding changes when something happens to the character they dont approve of. Spiderman is rich with characters, villains and continuation. He doesnt have to be your favorite character, but there is no denying that Spiderman is a force to be reckoned with. Pros: Over 45 years of continuation. Great Villains and plot twists along the way. A believable character with problems and emotions like the rest of us. Since such an important character, usually aligned with some of the top creators in the business at that time. Cons: Too much tampering with the history of the character making events that happened in the past not happen at all angering many long time loyal fans. Perhaps too much exposure at times and over-hyping sometimes occurs. Author's Thoughts: No doubt one of my historical favorites. Im personally in love with the original Amazing Spiderman run and actively try and seek issues to fill that collection whenever possible. Not a reseller's risk, always seems to sell for me and generally no matter what the condition on minor to major keys. An easy sell usually. I will say, I havent cared much at all for the recent Spidermans. Starting with Bagley who I couldnt stand, I felt Spiderman isnt the continuation king he used to be and the current stuff is too complicated for me to keep up with. For me personally its Amazing Spiderman #400 on down as the main attraction with other titles like Peter Parker and Marvel Team up as nice side quests. Favorite Era: That's a tough one, but I have to say the Bronze Spiderman of the Green Goblin, Gwen Stacey, Punisher, Tarantula era was a personal favorite of mine. The McFarlane era was visually cool, but I think the Bronze era outshined overall. Least favorite Era: The last 15 years. I dont know what is happening anymore. True, I dont read the new stuff, but I hear the headlines. Clones and eras of things never happening and even the art isnt interesting to me anymore. Did I say I cannot stand Bagley's version of Spiderman? My personal favorite artist to draw Spiderman: I have to call a multi-artist draw on this. Im especially fond of the Ross Andru/Keith Pollard era. I thought they drew Spiderman as he should be. Some guy who wasnt little and had some muscles but not some toothpick. I thought sometimes Spiderman is drawn too skinny. I hate skinny Spiderman. Put some meat on his bones. Just dont make him Hulk big. Im also into the Ditko/Romita years. I thought Ditko really shined on Spiderman. He deserves the credit he receives on him because he really shaped the feeling of the character. I thought Romita kept with the way I feel Spiderman should be drawn with a Silver Age flavor. Nothing these 2 did feels boring to me. McFarlane era was pretty good too, but looking back, I dont have the love for them now that I did when they originally came out. Its not bad, but its getting too stylized for my tastes. Okay, what is your opinion. Spiderman is a character that should have no shortage of opinions here. He has enough reasons to say why or why not you like a particular ingredient or the character itself. What do you guys feel about Spiderman?

You finally picked a Marvel character, I own both those comics I'm proud to say. I'm not a huge fan of Spider-Man but I'd say Spider-Man probably shaped a sense of right and wrong for me. I'm not interested in anything about him today, but his past is embedded in my memory. Now that the first movie is out, maybe they can quit retelling his origin. All your points are valid. Pollard is one of my favorite Marvel artists of the past. McFarlane was too stylized, never cared for anything he did. I will add that Spiderman always fought too many street thugs. Rocket Racer & Will O' the Wisp as villains were just lame to me also. Vulture, Molten Man, Dr. Octopus and all the early villains created by Lee & Ditko were the best. cfs

You finally picked a Marvel character, Well, I can only make one at a time. It takes awhile to make one of these threads the way I want to do them. That's why I hope over time people can decided they want to do their own. I mean come on, there is only thousands of characters to choose from. Im not going to be upset one bit if someone made a thread here. In fact, I would be quite happy. I own both those comics I'm proud to say. If they just got back to basics with Spiderman and quit fooling around with his background and history, this is a book that doesnt need much tinkering. All it needs is writers setting up plot lines and villains. Not drastic history changing events that wipe clean what was done so many years ago. It just needs to go back to basics.

I really don't want to spend time writing character summaries. I'd rather spend that time downloading scans and completing my galleries. When I make a page like this I dread writing a summarry as you can tell. catfish-comics.tripod.com/Sinnamon/005_Sinnamon.htmlIf it's fresh on my mind, I can write something impressive enough to get quoted on the publishers web page... catfish-comics.tripod.com/Sinnamon/001_Sinnamon_Grrl_vs_World.htmlI know Angelo now. We chat back and forth regularly by email, but even before he did know me so well... he published one of my letters in an issue... maybe two. Not sure. Ooops! I'm derailing the thread. My point was that I'm not much into formal writing. The only class I ever failed in high school was a composition class. It wasn't because I can't write. It's because I only turned in maybe one single composition the whole quarter. I made a 98% on the final exam (an actual test), but it wasn't enough to raise my grade higher than about a 0.4% for the quarter. I still got out of high school with a B average which I think is pretty good since I didn't really care. My dad recently confided that he learned most everything he needed to know to start his engineering career by reading an RCA tube manual. cfs

Its a lot of work doing these type of pages. Finding, saving, uploading, checking a few facts, finding a site to point at and then writing it up. Id push more of these out if they didnt take so long to start. But this is a marathon not a sprint. I can only promise to keep doing it. Im hoping eventually, I have something here in this area. I have the same hope for the creators area. It's the accumulation of threads that makes the category worth it. It just takes time.

Nothing wrong with it, but lack of traffic still affects conversation. It's a lazy snow day for me. Slept through most of it. Where's Joey?
Added to my post above..

Nothing wrong with it, but lack of traffic still affects conversation. Well.... I dont know what else to do about it really. I guess I just keep adding to the board bit by bit and hope eventually it pays off. I drop my link wherever possible. Create as many threads as I can. Post as much as I can. I mean, I cannot force people to come. I dont think there is enough here. So that is why I started the creator threads and the character threads. Its in an effort to eventually draw up support. Hopefully one day... One of my biggest problems is most of the people who know me already have their established boards to go to. I can only soldier on. I think about it a lot. I can either quit (which sometimes I think about that) or soldier on.... p.s. Although dreadfully slow here at times, Im not upset with who I have here. Whether infrequent or not the people that do drop a post once in awhile collectively give me just enough to keep at it. (talk about derailing, Im derailing my own thread).

The down side is that unique information brings people here, and threads on Batman, Superman & Spiderman are pretty common keywords. Not a bad foundation, but unique topics are what will get traffic here.

I generally enjoyed Bagley's art during his first run on The Amazing Spider-Man and really did enjoyed it. I did not like his art on The Ultimate Spider-Man I think the coloring ruined it. I'm very tired of John Romita Jr.'s artwork in general.
I do like Ross Andu art I espically loved his art on Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man he really did capture the feel of that and made it feel like a historic event.
I also think that Mike Zeck and Tom Lyle are very underrated Spider-Man artists
