You know, the last month of racing has been pretty boring. I thought the last really good race is when Jamie McMurray won at Daytona by mere inches. That was an awesome race. Since then, I think I could have fallen asleep every race. The race at Watkins Glen wasnt the absolute most exciting race, but it was a heck of a lot better than what we have been seeing. The entertainment value was high.
I think its always fun to see drivers go off the track at a higher rate than normal. And turn 1 provided plenty of fun moments. The absolute highlight of the race was watching Montoya get booted by Truex, get wobbley and slam into Harvick which gets both drivers badly wrecked. Harvick didnt know what happened and got mad and wanted to talk to Montoya so he blocks his car and both get out. A shouting matching takes place and then a game of pattycake breaks out. Before being dragged away by others. I was hoping Harvick was going to retaliate more, but he maintained. Asked afterwards on tv what him and Montoya was talking about. Harvick responded "I was talking about kicking his ass". Funny stuff.
The long break afterwards almost ruined the pace and feel of this race and I thought all the excitement was about over. But with Jeff Gordan comfortably cruising to a sure win. The drama seemed about over until he unbelievably spun himself out in turn 1 with 2 laps to go and handed the win over to Tony Stewart who was more than happy to accept and who had earlier done the same thing, but at a far less damaging time. Good Stuff!
Dale Jr. is now firmly on the bubble and this is probably the race that done him in for the chase with an extremely untimely blown engine.
The race still lacked enough greatness to be considered a classic. Still not enough side by side racing and lacked in any real drama through most of the race. But when compared to the last 3 snooze fests. Id have to rate this one 4 out of 5 stars.
