The writer of such works as Stormwatch, The Authority, The Planetary, Fell, Transmetorpolian, Excalibur, New Universal, Ministry of Space, Ocean, Iron Man: Extremeis, the animated G.I. Joe: Resolute movie and many more.
Ellis is one of those writers when he really cares about a project it shows and it's usually great, but if he's just doing it for the money it feels dialed in and just mediocre at best and shit at worse.
Also he tends to overload his workload and as a result a lot of his works are constantly late.

I'm not as welled versed as I would like to be with Warren Ellis. For me, his name proceeds him and he seems to have quite a loyal following. I have to say the few times I've read his stuff he has been above average at worst. So I think when I see his name on a comic, I'm willing to give it a shot. I'm just wanting to read more of his stuff before I have a true feeling about him. I'm sure others on here are ready to give a better personal opinion.

My recommendations: Iron Man: Extremeis, Stormwatch vol. 1 #37-50, Stormwatch vol. 2 preview & 1-11, WildCATs/Aliens #1, Ministry of Space, Ocean, and New Universal G.I. Joe: Resolute is an animated movie and it's REAL good you get it on DVD. His major works: The Planetary, The Authority, and Transmetroplain I heard only good things about but I haven't read much of them other than JLA/Planetary this Elseworlds book just sucks.

All of those books that cyberstrike mentioned are well worth your money. You must read Transmetropoliton. That series is off the chain. Its like a futuristic version of Gonzo. The film about Hunter S. Thompson, played by johnny Depp. That is who the main character is closest to to me. Authority is excellent in those first 12 issues that he did. they roll out of the Stormwatch work. Planetary is an examination of comics and other genres of fiction all wrapped up in a conspiracy laden X-Files-ish uncovering of the secret history of the 20th century where the Fantastic Four are the ultimate evil. It is an outstanding book that needs to be read from beginning to end. He has done so many good comics, NEXTWAVE was a MArvel Universe set Satire on the style of comics he created which was the super powerful secret Team who protect the world from the craziest bad guys while acting like a bunch of bastards. Machine Man is the team leader. Its pretty damn fun. His AVATAR series are all well worth your time as well. But they need to be read in their proper order and not just a random issue. GRAVEL is really good and pretty violent. His superhero trilogy had a lot of good ideas happening as well, those being NO HERO, BLACK SUMMER, SUPERGOD. Even Freak Angels is cool. It is a web comic, but it has been collected into 5 trades so far. Yeah, I am a fan.

All of those books that cyberstrike mentioned are well worth your money. You must read Transmetropoliton. One of my LCS's used to have Paul Melancon working as a clerk. He had been singing in a successful band called Radiant City which was named after the city in Dean Motter's Mr. X series. Later he went on to form his own band named after himself and open up for the likes of the Indigo Girls and others. He was a talented guy, but Dean Motter walked in one day to the shop and he was beside himself. It was completely unexpected and he is a huge fan. When I got out of collecting comics in either 1983 or 1984 (not sure which), Motter's Mr. X series ALMOST kept me collecting. The first issue was excellent. Years later when I got back into collecting I saw that Motter let others continue the series and I didn't miss anything. I've never read Transmetropolitan, but I bet it is a good read. df1
