You know, I generally think of California as another Michigan. They are very similar style tracks. Usually they are not very exciting but they arent the worst tracks on the circuit either. California used to be a snoozefest and Michigan was better. Now I think things have reversed.
I thought California had some great side by side racing. There was racing everywhere and there was things happening. I saw the Busch race and combined with the Cup race California had 2 of the most vicious crashes I seen this year. In the Busch race, I cannot remember the guys name...Kozolowski or something like that. If that hit happened 7 years ago...He would have been dead. Instead he comes out of it with only bruises.
Back to the Cup race. Jeff Gordon got into Mayfield who got into Reutimann which touched off a 6 car crash and sent Ricky Rudd drivers side 1st into the wall. I knew that was bad when I seen it. He came out holding his arm. Im reading he has a seperated shoulder.
My boy ran into Rudd earlier in the night (actually Rudd just came up on him) and pushed in my boys fender which eventually blew his tire and he was in a fireball. Very upsetting. I wish he would have pitted, lost a lap and fixed it rather than trying to stay out and then disaster struck. But I know he was trying to stay on the lead lap. I had a belief he was going to do okay if nothing happened...but something did happen and way too early.
Even though my boy was out, I found the race rather enjoyable compared to the follow the leader no action races of the last few months. Not really happy Jimmy Johnson won, but he deserved it I guess.
Kind of felt bad for Jr. When he said "They can go on with a race team without me, but I couldnt go on racing without them". It looked like he was getting ready to cry. "Just tired man, hot". Yes, it was a hot race.
In all, Id say this was a 4 out of 5 star race because it wasnt boring and had some side by side back and forth racing with some crashes.
Good stuff.
