I figured I better get this thread in here before they started dying off.
I would never admit to this when I was young and I had even talked myself into believing it, but when I was young, I really didn't have much love for the Rolling Stones. They seemed too old and outdated and too quirky or too soft to be anything I would much care for. And yet, there was tunes that I still found catchy and would sing along to and enjoy. It seemed kinda a love-hate relationship.
Now that I have grown older and my tastes for music are a bit more refined, I find myself enjoying their music now more than I ever have. And I don't know why. They're music didn't change, I just got older. And it seemed more of their music became pleasant to me. Mind you, there is still an awful lot I cannot stand from this band. But when they did put their eclectic mix of sounds together, they could at times make some wonderful noise for a few minutes. I find now I appreciate what they did. No, Im no fan of Mick Jagger or Keith Richards. I care nothing about their actions or lifestyle. I'm strictly talking music here. Nothing more.
Like I said, I figured I should get it in here before they died off.
I've grown old enough to appreciate the Stones.

I don't care for the singing so it makes it difficult to listen to them.
I love the guitar on this.
I think some of their old ones like Paint it Black aren't bad. I never liked Beast of Burden and Bette Midler singing her version just made it worse.

Being I play bass, I've always liked this one. This might be one of my favorite Stone's songs.

Of the rest, only Gimme Shelter & Paint it Black don't get on my nerves. I just see no talent in Mick Jagger. He can't sing worth a damn. He can't dance and he's an eye sore. To me, they sound like a bar band that got strung out on acid and sat around in the studio for weeks recording until the sound mixer finally got enough usable tracks to squeeze out a song.
I think that any other band covering their songs can make them sound better. Here is Great White blending the song Bitch and Foreigner's song Women.

I am a fan of the stones. Always have been. Their music is inspired by american Blues and they generally stayed within that foundation up until the 80's Tattoo You was their last decent album but by no means a favorite. I just started to learn to play paint it black on the guitar and have always liked songs like ANGIE and Hope you guessed my Name which is my personal favorite.
The thing about the Stones that has kept them around and so influential is their energy. their music is just filled with it. Mothers little helper, Satisfaction, Respectable, Jumpin Jack Flash, It doesn't follow a single road, meaning they played a wide range of song styles and genres. There have only been a handful of bands in rock history that have done that and have done it successfully. The Stones, The Beatles and Led Zepplin. It is what has set them apart from every other band and demanded you take notice.
I think the Stones need to finally retire, but they have added so much to music in general that its impossible to deny them.

It sound like outtakes from a sound check. df1 I think it sounds kinda jazzy and discoey. Kind of a sound of the times (1980). I also think his changing of his voice makes the song unique. No one is really jamming on this song. It's just a rather unique blend of riffs joining together and to me its a real decent song. It always has and always will be one of my favorites from them. But I do understand why you don't like it. They certainly have more rocking tunes. Like Give me Shelter and Monkey Man and Can't you hear me knocking and I even love that One Hit to the Body. I think one reason I couldn't get too much into them when I was young was because no one ever just wailed away on a classic solo or anything like that. Now I see it as their strength. They just always blended sounds. I think that is part of what made them great. And yeah Mike, they had good energy and didn't stay in one direction. I always like bands who have a wide array of styles.

I agree with Big. I'll like to add (its my opinion) like come on Mick Jagger has to be the best front man since Freddie Mercury passed away.
