Richmond was the last chance for drivers to get into the chase field. It was down to 3 drivers Busch, Harvick and Earnhardt Jr to fill 2 remaining spots with Jr. needing a miracle to get in.
Midway through the race it appeared that it might have a possibility as a wreck claimed both competitors in some way. Busch had rear end damage and Harvick's engine was spewing water from going through the grass and getting his cooling system blocked up. Spewing water is not good for engines. But the Red flag came out and allowed the car to cool down. Afterwards the yellow came out and they got the grill cleared off. Harvick had no engine problems the rest of the way. Busch on the other hand only had cosmetic damage and still finished in the top 10.
For what it was worth, Jr. was giving it his all. Spending most of the night in the top 5 but never able to take the lead. Even from his future teammate, I thought they would certainly move over and let him lead a lap. But they didnt. With 20 laps left to go, it was announced the Jr. had been eliminated. Still he soldiered on trying for a victory but looking like the best he could do is 2nd. When with about 6 laps to go, his engine blew. A fitting end to his chase hopes.
Jimmy Johnson took the win and the points lead. Seems unreal that Gordon can be leading by over 300 points and have it all evaporate because he didnt have as many wins as Johnson.
The Richmond track is perfect for side by side racing and action throughout. It wasnt a boring race at all. Although there are times it is not the most exciting either. The track lends itself to knowing that it wont be too long before something happens. And it appeared to be that way most of the night. Compared to all the follow the leader races, this one kept me watching.
