Since I had yardwork to do, I recorded the Kansas race to watch later in the evening. I didnt know it then, but that turned out to be a mistake.
The race itself seemed rather ho-hum follow the leader stuff with nothing special really happening. It is true the drivers were spread out and could drive any groove they wanted, which usually makes for great racing, but what I saw had little passing, which makes for a snooze.
However, 2 rain delays proved to be real dramatic and it appeared certain that the 2nd time the rains came, that would be it. At that point, it looked like Tony Stewart had pulled all the tricks out of his hat to win the race.
Just when it looked certain the race was over and the winner was decided, the rain stopped and the track drying began. It was at that point that ABC decided to stop broadcasting the race and move it over to ESPN2. Which ruined my recording. So, my vision of the race ended there except from what I seen in highlights.
It appears I missed the best part. Stewart, who was leading wound up getting caught up in a wreck. The damage didnt look too bad. But a fender was rubbing a tire. They chose to stay out hoping not to lose track position. It proved costly. The tired blew and his car was totaled. He finished way in the back.
The race was shortened and the drama built as most were gambling on finishing the race with no gas left in the tank. With 4 laps to go. There was a crash and a caution. Normally this sets up a green/white/checkers finish. But with it getting too dark to continue, they decided to let it end this way. Only the leader, Biffle, was out of gas and coasting behind the pace car to the finish line. With no gas, he wasnt able to keep up with the pace car and was passed by Clint Bowyer coming to the flag. Biffle crawled over the finish line, but not as the leader. But....he won the race. Those behind him didnt agree...but it counted.
So...I seen mostly the boring part of the race with some rain looming drama. And missed the exciting part of the race because ABC was some dickheads.
Score from what I seen:
3 out of 5 stars
Actual race:
4 out of 5 stars
