I just got a new shipment of comics yesterday and it's not like I haven't been noticing this before, but it's something that is plainly annoying me more and more the more I see it.
Coloring of comics have gotten way out of hand.
For example, one comic in particular (Action #900) had literally every page with glowing white hot colors screaming at my eyes. I always thought colors were supposed to be an addition to comics. Set the tone and mood and bring the pages to life. Instead it has become a distraction. I literally couldn't flip a page without feeling like I need to look at the comic with sunglasses.
And it didn't end there. Out of the 13 comics I had for the month, about 11 of them were over-saturating with strong colors. It's too strong. In fact, when I opened a comic and it has muted, toned down colors, it was completely pleasing to my eyes because it wasn't trying to hurt my eyes to look at the comic. Plus, it just looked a lot more realistic.
The use of glowing colors has really gotten silly. I could see it for an occasional explosion or ray being shot, but now it's being used on everything, including lines or spaces on uniforms, eyes slots, shit....just about anything they can.
It's great we have all these color enhancements to use in comics today, but going all stir crazy with them to me shows a lack of talent. If you've got things glowing on every page, you're not a good colorist.
I also had a comic recently where EVERY background was a transparency between two colors. So light blue became dark blue. Black would go to grey. Red would go to Pink. Yellow would go to Orange. This was used on EVERY background. You're not a good colorist either.
Again, I think the lack of editorial leadership is letting too many subpar things go out the door instead of being told "you really need to tone this down".
I'm all for digital coloring to be used if used properly and with some real talent. If all you can do is make everything glow, turn up the saturation to extreme levels and make backgrounds transparencies.....I think I'd rather see the comic in black n white.
