OK stop me if this sounds familiar Marvel is teaming up with Upper Deck Cards to produce The Avengers: The Kree/Skrull War which is basically a 40 page one-shot that will be released as 190 set of trading cards. Click here for the story. Now don't get me wrong I loved Defiant Comics but I loathed the Plasm #0 and Dark Dominion #0 trading card sets because I collected comics not trading cards. I should also mention that the next X-event is called X-Men: Schism which basically sounds like Cyclops and Wolverine are leading 2 sets of X-Men against each other.

If comic sales are dwindling, you can bet that sales on comic cards are hurting far worse. I'd call this an act of desperation to market something on the verge of complete collapse in the market. df1

When Defiant did it, it was original and I thought Plasm #0 was a cool book. I don't think I ever read Dark Dominion and I'm not sure but I think that came after Plasm. I do own both binders though. I do remember I had preordered the Plasm binder and it was a big buzz and people wanted it. That was, until the same exact book came out in Previews as a comic insert right BEFORE the Plasm binder came out. This was the 1st Defiant output. I remember they were eagerly awaited. I always felt like the Previews killed the buzz on the binder and got Defiant off on the wrong foot. But I also thought the comic was a cool book. David Lapham's art was really sharp and unique. The story had me wanting more and the binder with cards is something I still treasure having. At the time, it was an original gimmick. Now its not. What I'm seeing here with Marvel is not only a ripoff, its not original and it doesn't feature anything I'd want to see or own. Plasm was the start of a series and the launch of a company, this is a one shot. Plasm had a cool cover, these Marvel covers look like shit. Another fan out of characters fighting off camera villains in god-like poses and telling me absolutely nothing about what to expect inside. No thanks, I already have like 3,000 covers like this. Why do I need another one? Plasm had real interesting art with a detailed world and characters of imagination. The Marvel books looks plain jane with overabundant and unrealistic colors, overdramatic scenes looking like its trying to shock and awe me instead of just telling me a good story. Plasm was a good story, I can bet these will be run of the mill. I can actually remember scenes from Plasm nearly 20 years later. I doubt I would remember scenes from this a week later. Everything that made Plasm cool is what this Marvel concept is lacking. Another failure. Another dose of more of the same and why should I care? To put it mildly. I don't. I'd much rather have my two Defiant binders. Those are actually cool and the longer I own them the more I care about them. I actually gave a duplicate copy of my binder away to a little girl about a month ago. I gave it to her along with a stack of comics because I had duplicates of the binder and I thought she might find it cool that it was a book made out of cards. I had to send it through the mail to a far away distance so I didn't get to see the reaction, but I am told that my gift was well received. I wouldn't give the Marvel binder to my worst enemy, much less myself. Comics today are inept. Happy Trade Paperbacking and Digital Comic reading. Oh yes and happy one shots with lame covers too!
