I don't mind changes in comic costumes when they are being modernized to look like a cooler version of the costume. Sometimes it works and we end up with a better version.
But one thing I don't care for is when a costume gets "realistic" so it can be in line with movies and so on or vice versa. Often movies will make a comic characters uniform realistic and nothing like the uniforms they had in the comics. This was something that has always bothered me about the X-Men movies. I don't want to see characters walking around in leather jackets and things like that. I want to see them in their uniforms as seen in the comics. Unfortunately, what happens in the movies often starts affecting what happens in the comics.
For instance, I know its popular, but I really have gotten to the point where I cringe seeing Captain America's outfit looking like an Army Uniform. Yeah, originally, it was kind of cool. There are times I liked it. But I've seen too much of it. I know originally Captain America started out as a War Hero, but even in the Golden Age, his uniform didn't look like some souped up Army Uniform. It looked like a Superhero Uniform. Now its getting to be that everyone draws Captain America looking like he's fighting during Nazi days and I'm pretty much over it. Bring me back Classic Captain America! Seeing Cap's outfit either as a Helmet or a Air-Diving Cap is starting to make me want to barf. I want the Cap Uniform with the A above the eyes and the Wings on the side of his head. Not drawn on wings.
Same goes true for a character I've really never cared about. Superman. He's been reduced to wearing jeans and a T-Shirt with the Superman logo on it. Come on, Really??? I keep hearing DC say things like "We updated their appearance to be more in line with our modern audience". Jeans and a T-Shirt??? It's comics people. Not modern people walking around like people of today doing crazy things. Its comics. Bring back the fantasy and stop trying to be like everything needs to look like it would in a movie or a modern world. I don't want those elements. I could give a shit about the movie versions. I want what it would look like in a COMIC WORLD! A world of total make believe.
Wonder Woman's recent change into a Leather Jacket and skin tight pants really didn't work for me at all. The classic updated to modern times over the past few decades was really great and then they went and just totally fucked it up by making it something "real world".
I'm sure there are other examples, but rather than droning on and on about it, I'll leave it at this and we can discuss in future posts other examples. The point I'm trying to make is I'm not for taking Comic Characters who live in the world of Fantasy and Make Believe and making them into something I can see walking down the road and thinking nothing of it. It doesn't have to be real to me. It's comics. I want the comic uniforms. Not the everyday clothes styles.
