Looks like I'm in line to feel the full brunt of this upcoming Hurricane Irene. The Official Storm track has the eye of the storm going right over my city not too long after it makes landfall. I should see winds in excess of 100mph easily and consistently. I also live in an area that extremely flood prone. I have a feeling things are going to be a lot different for me after this weekend. Not sure what to expect. Lots of people are leaving town. Not sure this is a bright move, but I'm going to ride it out. I figure this will be the storm of my life. It's scary and exciting at the same time. Wish me luck!

A girl I work with felt in at her desk all the way down here in Georgia. df1

Yes, I did get a nice experience with the earthquake.
I was also working at my desk. I was working on this program called Inclearing. It's a program that I have to do everyday around the same time each day. It usually takes me about an hour each day to do it. My job is for the most part very stimulating, but this part of it sometimes makes me sleepy.
I was feeling a bit sleepy as I was doing Inclearing. Suddenly I thought I was dozing off because I felt my body rocking back and forth. I thought maybe I was passing out as I was working and the rocking motion was just a motion that startled me to open my eyes wider. Then I noticed I was rocking back and forth in my chair. It felt like I was in a rocking chair. Suddenly it was hitting me that this didn't feel natural. I then was looking at my desk and I noticed my computer screens were rocking back and forth just like I was. Just about the time it was dawning on me what might be happening. It stopped. Withing 2 minutes people were back in my office asking me if I was okay. I thought maybe this was a local thing so I posted on Facebook that we just had a tremor. When I hit enter, I had noticed that plenty of people all along the eastern seaboard had posted the same thing. It was an amazing realization.
In reality, it was barely anything to get concerned about. It was cool actually but nothing really ever felt threatening. That feeling is quite different with Hurricane Irene. People are getting nervous and antsy. Lots of people asking each other what are they going to do. I'm absolutely certain I am in for some kind of ordeal on Saturday evening and what exactly I get could range anywhere from mild but stormy, to extremely terrifying. I'm sorta hoping for something in between. Id like to have something memorable happen but I also dont want any loss of life or creator comforts like electricity being lost. I doubt very seriously It'll be that lucky. Can only wait and see now.

You should come to Va. and stay with your sister while this is happening. Staying there and getting We are pretty prepared up here. We are staying, and hope not to lose our power. The earthquake was pretty interesting. I won't tell you what I was doing when it hit, but When it hit I didn't know it was an earthquake and thought that maybe I needed to stop what I was doing at the time because I obviously didn't need anymore.

I always recall a 70's movie based on a true story where people decided to have a"Hurricane Party" and ended up dying because they didn't realize it was going to destroy their house. df1

Irene turned out to be a punk. I thought a few days ago I was in for the storm of my life but in reality I'd put it somewhere around 8th place or so and even that might be a bit high. The main thing Irene was was a nuisance. I lost power for 13 hrs and it made for a really boring day. I did a lot of sleeping and occasionally I checked things out on my phone. My phone was just about out of juice when the power came back on. So at least I was never totally without the internet, but I was awfully close.
It was clear that Irene had already spilled its load out on the Bahamas and the water between them and us. If Irene had hit us a couple of days early, it would have easily wiped us out. As it was, Irene was a former shell of itself. One thing I will give it is it was huge. It lasted a real long time and it was moving rather quickly too. The fact it lasted so long while moving quickly means it was a monster in terms of size. I'd reckon the stronger affects of the storm lasted a good 36 hrs. Well after the eye had passed, it was still howling strong winds at us.
But in terms of rains and total strength, it was a dud. I didn't even get flooded, which is something that happens to me on a decent Northeaster.
I'm thankful it wasn't big in terms of damage and loss of life. But in terms of excitement and feeling like I went through something, it was a total letdown. Too many of these letdowns is going to smack us one day. We certainly see plenty of near misses around here and we just keep getting the cry wolf treatment every time. One day the wolf is going to come and its going to fuck us up royally because we got punked one too many times already.

In '84 or so, me and a friend drove through the Florida panhandle the day before a hurricane struck. It was humbling to watch news footage the next day showing the devastation where we had been just a day prior. I actually quit watching the storm news. JayJays boyfriend posted some footage of the storm coming through Staten Island. Yeah. It looked like a wimp. I think we got more rain from Ivan when it looped through the Gulf and came back over us by way of Alabama. df1

I didn't even lose power. It was lame and I was almost dissappointed.
