I just finished watching the DC UNIVERSE film adaptation of Frank Miller and David Massuchelli's seminal comic tale Batman: Year One.
If you have watched any of the other DC Animated films, you know that they all feature a higher quality artstyle than the weekly TV Episodes. This is one of the perks of the higher budget. As evidenced in another conversation currently taking place, the artstyles used in many of these is what turns some people away. These films however tend to stick pretty close to the source material.
In the case of this film, DC hit every nail square on the head.
Not only is this a nearly 100% complete adaptation of one of the best comics ever made, but it also looks like alove letter to Massuchelli's outstanding and moody artwork. This feels like a live action detective/crime film. A Hardcore Noir thriller that draws you right in.
I admit that I miss Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman. I think he shoulf be the go to guy for all animated versions of the character.
Brian Cranston, the actor who plays the lead in the equally great tv series Breaking Bad plays Commissioner Gordan to perfection. In fact, watching Breaking Bad, I always saw Cranston as a perfect Jim Gordan and I hope that in future Batman films, if Gary Oldman doesn't return, that Cranston is his replacement.
The animation and voice acting work great together to draw you into both the story and the struggles of all of the characters.
There is no corniness here. This is gritty, violent, bloody and really really entertaining. 4.5/5 stars.
I only saw the basic version so I did not see the Catwoman featurette nor the documentaries so I can only rate the movie.
Fan of animation or not, this one is really worth your time.
