It's that time of year again. The time to look back and look ahead. Gonna put a few more categories up for this this time. Hopefully as the years go by, this will be cool to look at.
Anyway, with that being said, what do you feel was the best single comic of 2008 and why?

I keep trying to think what was the biggest issue of this year? What had the biggest buzz? What sold out immediately and found its way on ebay selling for multiples of cover price not weeks after it came out? Or, what in your mind was the best single story or highest impact comic of the year? Maybe it didnt skyrocket in value or fly off the shelves, but in terms of being the best...this was it! I'm having a hard time thinking about this one and was hoping you guys would throw a few contenders into the mix.

Ive been hoping some of you would come up with some candidates, but so far none. So, Im going to put up my candidate. And I say Im going to pick this one strictly for hype. Looking back over the year, I dont remember a lot of buzz for any 1 single comic. There was no Superman #75 or Batman #497 this year. Nothing that really stuck out as THE comic of the year to me. And I just dont remember anyone saying this is the book everyone had to have! And I personally dont remember any story that blew me away during the year. I have a more favorite story this year, but I dont think it caught the comic world by storm. I do think this book was as close as it came to being the single biggest hype comic of the year.
Batman #681
It remains to be seen how significant the book really is. If at all. But at least for a little while, it seemed to be the one that was the comic you needed to see. Ive seen it, read and it personally, I dont think it was all that. It was pretty cool, but honestly, It left me wishing it was better. But in terms of hype, I think it was the hype master of the year. So therefore, Im putting it as the Best Single Issue of 2008. Unless someone else wants to put up an argument with their pick!

Okay, let's talk hype, since I watch the new comic market fairly closely and didn't read much this year. The Secret Invasion series Marvel put out seemed over-ordered and isn't hard to find at or below cover price for each issue on eBay. Another book that comes to mind as having been hyped was Captain America 34, the first full appearance of Bucky as Cap. Anti-Venom's first appearance in Amazing is a solid 10.00 book, maybe more. There was a black cover variant of that book, number 569 by the way, which according to the census only has received 1 in CGC 9.8 to date. According to gpa there is no record of one having been sold yet, and that book has been out about 4 months now. Out of about 40 copies I bought I sent my top few to CGC and was fortunate to have received 2 in 9.8. I'm looking forward to their arrival. Skaar got his own series and seemed to start strong and then fade. Deadpool got his own ongoing again and started strong. Though it hasn't surged too far in price, the first few issues of that series still seem strong.

You know, I looked at the "What's hot" section before I wrote my message and considered some of the contenders there. But I kept wondering, which of those was hot enough to be "Comic of the year?" Maybe Anti-Venom was a real contender, but other than a launch, what real impact did it have to Spiderman ongoing? And more importantly, which issue and would any single issue be considered the one to be comic of the year? I'll admit it's hot in the aftermarket scene and it is certainly a contender, but is it #1? The reason I went with Batman is it had all the question marks in it. Did Batman die? Is there going to be a new Batman? As well as, it was easy to narrow it to one memorable issue. Maybe Anti-Venom might have been hottest of the year? But is it the Comic of the year? Personally I wouldnt give either the term best story. I read a better DC comic earlier this year, I forget which one, but it ends with the Terminator getting punked. I thought that was a better story. I still feel The Twelve was the best series or collection of stories. But which comic won as the all around attention getter of 2008? Maybe because it is fresh, Im going to go with Batman #681. Just because it seemed to have the one key moment of the year. It was this year's "Death of Superman" in my opinion.

I think Batman 681 is a good pick. I actually read the Anti-Venom stuff and it was pretty good.
