Atlanta is typically a side by side high speed close race that has plenty of drama and known for incredible close and sometimes photo finishes. Too often tracks can bore you to death as we had the previous too races because the action is so follow the leader. Atlanta is not known for that at all. It's racing with action. However, that would not be the case this time. This race would be marred by drivers unable to handle a hard tire that Goodyear brought to the show. The drivers hated it from the get go and it became apparent, hardly any of them could drive on it.
As the race began, Carl Edwards took the roll of looking like the guy who had the tires figured out and looked well on his way to his 3rd consecutive win after a week of turmoil when his team was caught cheating, however his engine expired and dropped him an unexpected 42 place finish.
From there on it was the hottest driver in Nascar, Kyle Busch leading the charge with no one able to reel him in. His win would become historic as he gathered the 1st ever victory for a driver in a Toyota car. It certainly will not be the last.
To me the race was ruined by this set of tires as it looked like 40 or so drivers could barely hold onto their car, while 3 or 4 drivers drove okay. Even the winner said the tires were a handful. 2nd place finisher Tony Stewart blasted Goodyear publicly stating it was the worst tires he had ever drove on and that Goodyear ought to be ashamed and should be run out of Nascar just like they had been run out of many other series. Although I feel the criticism is a bit harsh, I will agree, it was the tire more than anything else that ruined a good racetrack's show.
