I haven't picked up any of the new VEI versions of Valiant comics but I have seen plenty of cover shots and interior pages in digital format. And while I'll admit that a lot of the interior stuff looks average and so-so, I will give them props for at least making some of their covers looks a bit engaging. The overall look of the comics at least to me make the comics approach levels of I'd want to check them out.
I'm also noticing a lot of hype over the comics. It appears they have gotten off to a legitimate start and captured some fans in the process. Now whether it is smoke and mirrors, I don't know. But at this point, they do seem like they have some fans clamoring to talk good about them.
I will say I haven't liked things like their cocky self promotion, their moving mouth covers using a QR code reader are downright silly and the fact they are resorting to multiple covers and printings means to me they are following the same failure script that all other companies have today. I don't see their initial successful appearing launch as sustainable. I do however wonder if part of their appeal is how god awful the Dark Horse Valiant books were.
Let's be real here. Those books were horrendously bad. They did not capture any of the charm or the imagination that was or used to be Valiant. In fact, I think they further threw dirt on properties like Magnus and Solar and Turok. In my mind, Dark Horse couldn't have done ANY worse. In fact, they are my least favorite version of Valiant Comics ever. I really wonder if Dark Horse's pitiful job played a roll in VEI's transparently successful launch?
Furthermore, it also seems like some of the titles that have been on the Valiant shelf have people dying to see new stories from their properties because it has been so long since anything original came out from them. Titles like Harbinger, X-O Manowar and Hard Corp have all been ages without any new material and the general public is more eager to see new stories about them then rehashed tired stories about Solar and XO.
So a couple of questions. Did Dark Horse's piss poor job with their turn help VEI's success? And is VEI doing things right in your mind and lastly, are they sustainable as a company?
I'm asking you.
