Normally, in the past, I have taken a look back at the year with various nominee sections asking for board members to vote and indicate what they thought was their nominees for best and worst of a particular year. It normally was a tradition for me to do so in December. The responses each year went from lukewarm and tepid, to nonexistent. So rather than make a bunch a categories I figure no one will respond to, I decided this year to make one thread and see if anyone else would like to contribute.
My memories of the 2012 comic year seem very muddled. I haven't been involved with comics throughout the year so therefore, I haven't been on top of things. It would take real news for me to have a clue as to what is going on. But perhaps there was a couple of moments that stood out to me.
DC and Marvel appeared to have the years once again where they tried their best to shake off any old timers and convert readers to enjoy bite sized nuggets of their choosing. I can't really think of any standout storylines or news. Normally they have something a bit more memorable in terms of moments. But not this year. The most memorable area seemed to be an interest in gay characters. In terms of decency, I have to give the slight edge to Marvel. They dealt with a character who had been long outted as gay and had him marry his "boyfriend". DC could not be outdone on this and had to turn a character with a 70 year history suddenly gay, the Original Green Lantern. This met with some disdain from readers (such as myself) at the direction in comics wondering if comics had become nothing more than issues of National Enquirer, while others stated that comics were "moving forward" on the issues of a real world. It's debatable what side wins here, but I don't think it's debatable that the 2 main heavies of comics had little more to offer.
They appeared to do much better in film. DC's big film was Batman's The Dark Knight Rises featuring Bane. While Marvel more than countered with The Avengers. While the Avengers seemed to take top honors in box office ticket sales and fan eye candy, The Dark Knight Rises opened up to Tragedy in a Colorado Movie Theater where a deranged gunman walked into the emergency exit and opened fire on the unsuspecting crowd killing numerous innocent victims. I personally thought this was a black eye for comics. That although they had no responsibility for what happened, it happened under their watch and appeared to influence the gunman which to me further tarnished the image of comics.
Independent comics for the most part appear void of sure fire hits but one that appeared to have taken off was the relaunch of Valiant comics to the delight of many. Although it remains to be seen how far into the future the rag tag organization can go into the future, I personally feel it's unlikely they reach the total output of the original Valiant. Others will disagree and say this one is well made and here to stay.
For that reason, I would myself say Valiant appeared to be publisher of the year.
I would have a hard time in naming comic of the year.
I'm sure I've missed quite a bit and would love to be reminded, but this is what appeared to have stood out to me, a year long outsider with more than a passing interest in comics.
I would be appreciative for anyone else to include what they thought was the best or worst of 2012 right here.
