CBR is reporting that Johnny Depp is being wooed to play Dr. Strange in an upcoming movie. What are your thoughts on that? At first I kinda wrinkled my face about it but after i thought about it a bit if hes cleaned up I can see him looking like Dr. Strange and he has been able to pull off odd roles in the past....so I can see it. Also he'll be a box office draw so I can see why they want him.

I think he could do very well. I was concerned about him doing sequels, but he did three Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Dr. Strange and Antman are the two movies I'm most interested in seeing. I'm not interested in Scott Lang as Antman though, so I may be disappointed.

Yeah, I agree. As long as he took the role seriously, I think he could make it work. One thing I always got when I read Dr. Strange, a title I didn't admittedly read much of but enjoyed when I did, I always took him as a serious, no nonsense type of character. I don't see him as being a joke quipster like Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Thing, etc. He always had a cool, in control demeanor when I read him. At least to me he did. So for me, I wouldn't want Dr. Strange being corny ala Iron Man. I think quick jokes and jabs constantly would spoil it for me. So if Johnny Depp played it seriously, I think he would be a good fit personally.
I'm also interested in the Ant-Man movie but I'm not familiar with the actor you speak of.

I didn't like the Iron Man movies turning Tony Stark into someone with jokes. Dr. Strange should be very serious because the challenges he'd be facing would be extremely serious. Scott Lang is not an actor. It's a character that took over the role of Antman in the comics. Hank Pym is Antman to me. The movie is supposed to be influenced by Marvel Premiere #47. The art in that issue is extremely nice. Layton inks Perez. You can't get much better than that. df1

You can't get much better than that. df1 I have the issue and was considering selling it when I was selling books online but I was holding out until the movie got closer. It felt like the potential for the book to go higher was not yet being reached. And now that I have stopped selling I am glad I have not sold it. But I also havent read it or even looked at it. I will have to dig it out one day and read it. I did know the movie was being based off it. I did not know the new Ant Man was named Scott Lang. Is the book we are discussing where he first appears? Hank Pym was always Ant Man to me also. I seen stuff that Michael Douglas was being considered for Hank Pym. That seems like a stretch for me and this is where I am out of touch with the goings on between Scott Lang and Hank Pym. Is Hank Pym supposed to be this old crusty Ant Man and now Scott Pym is the new younger Ant Man? Sometimes I don't like some of the liberties movies take with Marvel characters. One of the worst things I saw was making that old guy into Magneto and all the X-Men having near ordinary clothes. Sometimes when they try and make it too real and shy away from the comic side of things (uniforms and super hero looking) it kind of loses it for me. While sometimes some of it is good, such as The Original Wolverine movie and some other examples, sometimes I want it to look like comic book characters and not just ordinary as possible looking people. Something gets lost in the process to me. And when I think of someone like Michael Douglas as Henry Pym, something is getting lost in the process to me. And yes, please don't turn Dr. Strange into some modern cavorting doctor who womanizes and tells jokes all the time. That would ruin it for me. I want to see something like Steve Ditko's amazing worlds come to life. And this is where I think the challenge of Dr. Strange will come into play because I think they'll make him into an ordinary person with mystical abilities and none of what makes the comic great will be realized. The uniform, and the crazy worlds Strange would sometimes get involved in. If they make it too real, I think it will miss the mark.

My memory is pretty rusty. I think Scott Lang had been floating around as a supporting character in Iron Man or something else. I think he saw a need that needed addressing and the Antman costume was available, so he put it on and the story revolved around that.
I watched the old Dr. Strange TV pilot on youtube again about a year ago. I can honestly say I still think it was the best TV pilot for a character that Marvel ever did.
