Now again, Im not much of an admitted hockey fan. But, I can watch a few here and there. But the last I remember hearing, the Stanley Cup that just passed was one of the lowest rated events ever.
Is Hockey struggling these days? There are some die hard fans that you see who really get into it. But it doesnt seem to have a growing fanbase around here. And I thought I remember seeing on ESPN that hockey was barely attracting interest even for the Stanley Cup and that was a bad thing.
I'll admit, when you're in the middle of a good game and the crowd is into it and the teams seem like they hate each other, it can be fun to watch and deserve more attention. I just think too many see it as a minor sport compared to Football and Baseball.
Can Hockey be hot again?

I think any industry relying upon disposable income will be struggling for awhile because of the economy. If people are spending all of their money on gas, they cant afford a second or third tier sport like Hockey. Toss on top of that the $4 hot dogs (or whatever they cost) and the money just isn't there in a lot of people's budgets.

Hockey used to be the # 3 sport in the US. Basketball took that over though. And hockey is actually doing better I think than some people say. A lot of games were selling out last year. It could be on a come back. The only thing that hurts it is that it doesn't get much time on tv like other sports. It comes on the same time as basketball and football season.

I think there are several things that Hockey could do to stimulate interest.
The first mistake they made was switching from ESPN to Versus. Not many people know of Versus and it seems to have killed Hockey on TV. I believe they are taking steps to bring the sport back to ESPN where it will do much better.
The second thing that I have issue with is the scheduling. The teams play their division rivals about 8 times per season and I think their other conference teams 4 times. IMO, each team should play every other team in the league twice per season (home/away). This would bring the stars like Crosby to every arena once per year. To market the sport better, the star players need to make it to all the cities so that they can be seen at least once a year.

Good point about the star players needing to make it to every city at least once.
