Punisher Mini Series #1 You know, this book has been around most of my collecting life and I had never read it until a few weeks ago. I dont know how the rest of the series goes (actually I only have #2 besides this one). But this one here is a self contained prison action thriller all onto itself. I know it practically put the Punisher on the map, but its highly deserved. As I was reading it it moved quickly and never lost me. Maybe its not a work of art, but it read like I was watching a Prison movie and kept me interested. So much so that I would say if you havent already read it like I hadnt. I would recommend it.

I would say all of Starman vol 2 by James Robinson. Simply one of the best series I have ever read from start to finish. It's 80 issues of pure greatness.

A recent one, and a quite straightforwards as a mini (also TPB collection) is Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters. Written by Gray and Palmiotti (also the writers of Jonah Hex - which is great - amongst other books), the series is based on concepts by Grant Morrison and features new incarnation of very-much second and third tier characters. The politics may seem very "liberal is good, anything else is bad" in the first chapter, but there is far more to it than that. For a start the characters are less than sympathetic for the most part at the outset, taking time to recognise what being a (super) hero is. A great read.

I had this poster on the back of my bedroom door as a kid . . . I loved Zeck's art and the story is classic punisher . . .

Just re-read 'Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters' via the TPB (leaving the floppies bagged and boarded. Reading in a more compressed way (over a couple of nights) was cool as it highlighted a couple of things I hadn't picked up on previously. Highly recommended.
Also, if you see them going at reasonable prices, Marvel fans could do worse than pick up the Young Avengers hardcovers. This short-lived book (to return when Heinberg has space in his schedule) is an excellent read, reminiscent of New Teen Titans by Wolfman and Perez, but very much a contemporary post-Avengers Disassembled and post-Dawson's Creek/OC/etc type of read. Which is better than it probably sounds. Highly recommended.

Harsh Realm by Harris Comics 6 issue or the collected TPB which is tough to find.
I'm not into gaming or D&D. I'm not overly excited about the art in the comic. I do love the storyline. Kid goes into a virtual reality gaming world and stays. He likes it better than the real world. A private detective is tasked with finding him. Immersed in the imaginary new world, a character might find his vision enhanced if he drinks from a stream.
Chris Carter bought the name and bastardized the concept. A lawsuit followed when James Hudnall the original creator was not given proper credit. Chris Carter had signed a deal to create original concepts for TV. He tried to pass Harsh Realm off as his original concept. That may be why you don't hear from him anymore.

But watching Joey drive like Juan Pablo Montoya, I didnt make it more than a couple of pages. I'll get around to reading it when I have time.

Harsh Realm #1-6 (Harris Comics) This series turns Fantasy into Sci-Fi and I loved it. Normally I'm unimpressed by the fantasy genre, and this series found a way to make it acceptable to me. The art didn't excite me, but the story pulled me in and made me not care about the art. If I ever see a TPB, I'm buying it.
