A few recent series that are required reading.
"Y" The Last Man EX MACHINA Runaways 1-12 All by Brian K. Vaughn. These books are just beyond reproach regarding quality of story along with solid artwork.
New X-MEN by; Grant Morrison and various Artists One of the very best X-MEN runs ever produced. Except for the last 6 issues.
Irredeemable by; Mark Waid. Imagine Superman got tired of hearing what people really thought about him and turned bad. This book is outstanding.
KICK ASS: 1984 Ultimate Avengers All written by Mark Millar with various Artists. These books all offer solid thrills, original concepts and rock solid storytelling and characterization.
All of Warren Ellis's books
All of the Hellboy series; These should be on everyones pull list. Just great, great writing. And very cool artwork that really sets the mood.
Northlanders DMZ LOCAL All written by; Brian Wood. These books are just great reads. Especially DMZ and Northlanders
These are just a few things that are out there right now that are not among the main comic genres that you usually see.

The Transformers: All Hail Megatron The evil Decepticons have won the war and begin the conquest of Earth and all that stands in their way is a human resistance led by miltary man Spike Whitwhicky and his father Col Whitwhicky. The Autobots are demoralized, Optimus Prime is in a coma, and have a traitor in their midst and stranded on a dead Cybertron even if they can get to Earth will there be anything to save? The IDW G1 TF Universe gets turns upside down, and for the first time in a LONG time a new and different direction that is actually new and different and is a much needed breath of fresh air on a classic franchise.
The Transformers: For All Mankind 3 years have passed since All Hail Megatron and with the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons belived to be finally over. Why are the Autobots and the Decepticons still on Earth? Which Autobot dies? Who will be the new leader of the Autobots after Optimus Prime quits? Can the Transformers co-exist in peace, and leave Earth or will the war be restarted? A new creative team asks these new questions. A really BOLD new direction that even shocked this old Transfan.
X-Factor Peter David's take on the mutant detective agency continues with it's exciting mix superheroes and character driven drama with Jamie Madrox, Siryen, M, Layla Miller, Rictor, Strong Guy, Longshot, Darwin, Shatterstar, and Wolfsbane continue their adventures including a trip to Las Vegas to save Pip, the troll. Rictor finds out Wolfsbane is pregnant and claims it's his child at the same time she finds out he's bisexual and having an affair with Shatterstar. It's funny that book about a group of second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth string X-characters would be the best X-book that Marvel publishes but it is.
Irredeemable a dark superhero story about a Superman-like character that was once the world's the greatest hero and now has become the world's greatest villain.
Incorruptible a spin-off of Irredeemable but flips the question: can one of the world's greatest villains become it's greatest hero.
Darkwing Duck Darkwing Duck is back and that means it's time to get dangerous! As DW comes out of retirement to battle the mysterious Quackweks Company, the Fearsome Four, and his own doubts and of course his very large ego. A very funny, loving, and satirical superhero spoof that is an absolute blast. If Disney were to make this story into an animated movie I would buy the day it comes out.

A couple more books to add to the list.
Steve Rogers: Super Soldier so far this has been a really cool direction for the character and the initial arc is solid both Story and Art wise.
Locke & Key; I am almost finished with volume #3 of the series. It is written by Horror author Stephen King's son. Very well written and creepy as hell. Great concept that I look foreward to seeing appear on TV. At first I wasn't sure about the art, but It started to grow on me and I really like the consistency of the character models.
Very worth your time.

The Astonshing X-Men by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday-The greatest X-Men story EVER forget Clarmont and Morrison, Whedon makes the X-Men cooler than they ever been.
X-Factor Visionaries-Peter David vols. 1-4 Before the current X-Factor series David's brief run on the title back in 93 and 94 shows his talent and while the art by Larry Storman is not by any means great (IMHO his art is saved by inker Al Milgrim) is better than his breif return to series years later.
Incredible Hulk Visionaries-Peter David vols 1-7 David's epic run the book that made him a star shows his power as storyteller as he takes a character that no one wanted and remakes the Hulk from a stupid monster into a complex 3-dimensional character.
