Batman - A.K.A. The Caped Crusader 1st Appearance - Detective Comics #27 May 1939 Decent Website: www.darkknight.ca/Opinion (of thread creator only). I dont know a whole lot about Batman, but its easy to note that Batman is just as huge and maybe even bigger in some circles as Superman. Likewise a modern day hero with a 70 year history who has appeared in TV Shows, Movies and Cartoons. Batman is a cooler counterpart to the sometimes bland Superman. Lurking in the shadows doing detective work and solving crimes. Batman has an array of weapons and defense mechanism's in the various pouches he carries. His sidekick Robin is ever ready to do battle with him and help him solve crimes. An acrobatic son who lost his parents to murder who would go on to become the Rich Lady's Man by day and tricky Dark Superhero by night. Batman never failed to be cool in so many ways even during his most un-cool times. Pros: A Near 70 year span of comics. Batman could take a life and untold expenses to collect. The detective work Batman does especially in his Batcave can be quite entertaining. Generally a hand-to-hand fighter who wins by split second decisions. Batman seems more of a thinking man's hero compared to Superman. Cons: Villains over the years can be downright silly. Some seem more of a sideshow than villain. But used properly, the sometimes childish bad guys can come off very sinister and conniving and believable. Other times, just plain corny. Author's Thoughts: I have more of a love for Batman than I do Superman. I have collected on and off for long periods of time and have a decent collection that is scattered throughout but dates back to the 1950s. When used properly, Batman can be a great read over a stretch of many consecutive months. Many classic covers to go after. Batman is a never ending quest between what you can find and what you can afford. Favorite era: Tie Early 70's when the direction was changed from silly to gritty overnight and mid to late 1980s with so many classic storylines. Least favorite era: The 60's were a time of many corny Batman covers and stories. Many are not worth the time to look at and read. However, I do find I still buy much from this era especially if it has a cool cover. My Personal Favorite Artist to draw Batman? Neal Adams Once again, what did I miss. I have to admit I dont know a ton about the history of Batman except what is pretty common knowledge to most folks on Batman. Batman is a character that the more I have, the more and faster I buy. There is plenty to collect when it comes to Batman and that's a good thing.

I was a straight out Marvel fan. A proud Marvel Zombie. DC always seemed dated, convoluted and the stories weren't as mature to me. Clark Kent worked at a TV station. Batman was a loner. It wasn't what I knew from TV. Now Marvel seems convoluted in the way DC was. I appreciate the Marvel characters, but I couldn't really respond in this category because I don't care about them anymore. I remember them from the 70's before Tony Stark was a teenager. I appreciate the Batman TV show, but I really think he's lame in the comics and in the movies. I hated this last movie that everyone loved. I thought they tried to take a fun 60's superhero and turn him into some pretentious crap. The Ninja connection was just stupid too me. Batman was never a Ninja. Sadly people will argue... "Why not?" Well, because I saw the TV show and read the comics be it 40's reprints or new comics in the 70's. Nothing about him was a Ninja. If another Batman comic or movie never came out, I wouldn't care. The gay references are too easy. What were they thinking? What famous men in history ever tagged around with young boys besides Michael Jackson? I don't know and it doesn't matter. When I ran my Broadway site, a transgender crowd was visiting my site regularly because of the Makeshift comic they never produced. It was yet another reason I shut it all down. I had no interest in feeding the non-comics audience I did have. That wasn't what I appreciated about the comics. cfs

I hear you. For the most part, I was never a big DC fan either. I fell in love with Marvel and I have remained that way throughout although what I see now does not resemble anything that I grew up with and I am not buying any new Marvel comics, its still the company I most relate to and the one I want the back issues to the most. Marvel used to be a whole lot of fun. It had continuation down. Each story was feeding the next. The Universe was running separate storylines, but when necessary, could could cross over and make it work with each affecting the other's storyline. And then back to their separate ways. Now its a bunch of crossover mini series and I have to follow 10 issues to understand 1 story. Its not the same. You used to be able to buy one title and if you liked it, stayed with it and you just kept going until you wanted to get off the ride.
DC never seemed to have that to me. Their characters did seem older, lamer and trying to catch up most of my young years. But as I got older and collected more books including more and more DC, I do have an appreciation for them and what they ultimately have meant to comics. I mean, it pretty much started with them. Batman and Superman were the 1st two threads I made here because it almost had to be. It dates back to here.
Im certainly going to expand from this. This is not going to end up being 5 threads and Im done. Im hoping to keep adding to it and just keep going little by little. It takes time to put together though. Sometimes this stuff is a lot of work.
Anyway, if we take Robin as a sidekick and look at it as a real world situation, it probably does look sick and twisted. I prefer not to look at it that way even though that is the way it has always been depicted. I think a little more sexual conquests with the ladies wouldnt have hurt through the years. Its too easy to make it look gay. Sometimes I prefer to think of Batman without Robin and he just is almost like Daredevil lurking in the shadows and catching thugs by surprise. On his own and with the right writing and art, Batman is cool as hell. I just feel like he doesnt get done right....much. Not saying never. But, not much. I think compared to Superman, I have more potential to like him. But yeah, the Robin side and also, the lame villains...keeps me from caring too much about this character. Im more of a collector of Batman than a reader.
