The reason I created this thread area was specifically an experience I had yesterday at Joey's shop. A book caught my eye and the price was looking right. So, I decided to check it out. This was an older early Silver Age book, so I wasnt expecting perfection, but I still wanted it to look nice.
I reviewed the book and at 1st glance, the book look amazingly sound with only minor blemishes here and there. It looked like at the very worst, it was a VG+ and I was tempted to call it a FN-. It was in pretty nice shape. It was sold....until....Until I looked at the spine and noticed I could only see 1 staple! Is the other gone?
I took the book out of the bag and board for closer inspection. The staple wasnt gone, but it was however, no longer attached to the front cover. Looking through the book, the books was extremely solid. Sometimes when a book is no longer attached and you open the front cover, you get the feeling that the inside wants to slide right out of your hands. Not this one. Even though the bottom staple was no longer attached, the book acted like the staple was still there and clung tightly to the cover. There was no fly away action when I opened it up. The pages were surprising very white, probably off white, but this book was like 45 years old and whiter than most books this old. It was still in overall very nice shape. Part of me really wanted this book. But my mind kept wondering how much this detached staple really affected the grade? I wasnt very sure. Even though I have a grading guide and can look it up at jp,e, I wanted real world practicality here. Not just a guide reference.
Reason being, I had an otherwise solid looking book with a detached staple. If one wouldnt look, one would never know from just eying it over. It was only when I was doing close inspection did I even notice.
Needless to say, I left without the book, but later wished I had bought it. To me it wasnt looking like a glaring defect like missing pieces, chunks or folds. Those kind of defects bother me a lot worse than this detached staple. But in the real world, is it just as bad or worse than those defects?
You tell me.
