As I find myself slowly getting back into new comics, one artist continues to impress me every time I see his work. This is going to be written from a personal perspective, but I actually have come to love Steve Epting's work.
To me he has a perfect mix of capturing what I loved so much about comics from the past with the promise of what comics can be like today and in the future. His work doesnt insult me. It isnt over stylized of formula-tic. There is a hint of old school blended with maybe a reminder of Alex Ross. But whereas Alex seems to stay with the Golden Age look, Epting seems to take that realism and brings it to today. Everything looks believable and real. And hot in my personal opinion. I so far have never been disappointed with anything I have seen this man do.
The current Captain America series is something I am actively collecting and want to fill in all the missing pieces of. I missed it when it started and Im only getting into it now. But I feel like this Brubaker/Epting storyline which is going on 40 issues now (who does this anymore?) may be a modern day classic unfolding before our eyes and perhaps 10 - 15 or more years from now will be considered a great series up there with Byrne X-Men and Miller Daredevils. You may not like what is going down with Captain America, but if you pick it up and look at it, its not boring and the art is superb.
You can tell me you're not impressed all you want. I wont budge on this one. There are tons of artists who make me want to puke every time I see something by them. This is not one of them. If more books could be done with this much devotion to quality, I am sure comics will continue to be something I love. Here is one of the few modern day artists Im going to give a wholehearted thumbs up to.
Keep up the kick ass work Steve Epting!!!
