One of the most asked questions in the original Transformers cartoon series back in the 80s was: "Where does Optimus Prime's trailer go when he transforms to robot mode?" As a toy the original (or Generation 1 or G1 for short) trailer transforms into a base/repair center with a 6 wheeled go-cart named Roller, and according to his tech specs if you injured one of the other two parts of Prime would feel it. Now the original show only used the base and Roller in two episodes. The rest of the time the trailer would appeared and disappear into thin air when Optimus Prime transformed which has led many fans to believe that Prime could park the trailer in a "pocket dimension or sub-space".
Now lets flash forward to 2008 and a new incarnation of Optimus Prime who now transforms into a futuristic fire truck gets asked by a kid about where his trailer goes when he's robot mode and Prime doesn't know the answer to that question.
I guess the more things change the more they same. ;D
