I remember growing up in the seventies and noticing that whenever two Marvel heroes fought each other there was NEVER a clear winner. Even if it was obvious which hero should win the fight, something always happened to end the fight prematurely and there wasn't a winner. It was like Marvel was afraid to have one of their heroes defeat another one. It seems Marvel has changed in that regard, and I heartily applaud them for doing so. I read Hulk 5 today, also referred to by some as Red Hulk 5. Red Hulk whipped Thor, and after doing so even kicked that helmet-thing Thor wears on top of his head. It was an enjoyable issue to read. I may even go back and read the previous issue where Red Hulk whips Green Hulk and breaks his arm. Loeb did a great job of making issue 5 fun, and if the rest of the series has been as much fun to read I can see why the series is so hot.

You know, I never truly realized this. Okay, maybe deep down I knew this, but I didn't think it was this apparent and actually was kind of shocked by the statement. And then I got to thinking.....what issue was a hero vs. hero in classic Bronze Age era....which books actually had one hero totally dominating or kicking the other's ass? And the more I thought of it, the more I couldnt think or remember any and the more it bothers me!! Perhaps it is because our heroes are supposed to be heroic. Losing to another good guy is not really an option. But, I still feel like somewhere during this era, somebody got their ass whooped by another hero..... Can anyone think of anything? What would be the closest? This thread got me curious on what could be dug up and remembered.

I was distinctly aware of Marvel never allwoing one of their heroes to defeat another one whil I was growing upmin the seventies. I always thought it was because it might hurt the size of the fanbase of the losing hero, but that was my theory as I was growing up. I remember seeing two of Marvel's heroes fighting on the cover of a comic only to be disappointed when there was no winner inside. That seems to have changed under Joe Q, though it may have changed before him. I commend Marvel for the change.

I think it is healthy to have Heroes defeat other Heroes. I even think it also develops storylines because what happens when that Hero is defeated? Does he feel shame? What happens when they meet again? Their could be long standing rifts that hurt teamwork in the future. Could backstabbing enter into our Heroes minds?
I think it just opens things up and its a lot more realistic. I hate undefeated heroes. I like it when they deal with a problem and bad moment and rise above it.
