One thing I always found hypocritical about Comic collectors is their disdain for LCS owners and dealers trying to sell their comics.
Sure, I understand there are bad eggs out there from every walk of life and comic dealers have no shortage of them too. Comic Stores have been notorious for overgrading, overpricing or taking advantage of unsuspecting customers. But there are also plenty of good dealers out there. But whenever I see threads or conversations on dealers, they are generally negative.
I have one thing to ask? Why does a Comic Dealer open a store?
To make money I would think is the #1 answer. We don't seem to have a problem with this fact with any other dealer we deal with in our life, but if a Comic Dealer tries to flip comics, art or collectables and make a few bucks, he is considered a scoundrel.
I also think its hypocritical to bash dealers because we all buy comics from somebody. And generally that person sold to us at a profit for them. Maybe one day you will do the same thing. Now who is the hypocrite?
In this day and age where there are few LCS's remaining, I'd like to think that most (not all) but most un-ethical comic dealers have been weeded out. I'd like to see more LCS's again. I havent seen a new one sprout up in a very long time. Its not healthy to bash dealers and see them leave. What if they all disappeared? What then? Shouldnt they be able to run their store, pay their bills, feed their families and live the American dream of Capitalism? Shouldnt we be glad there is a place to go where there is tons of comics sitting in one spot that we can actually see and look through? Otherwise, you'd have to buy everything online.
Like I said, I realize there are still a lot of shady characters in Comic Stores, but if you run into them, don't go back. That's what I do. Hopefully you have more than one choice. When you find a good store, stick with it and don't bash.
