Certainly I grew up during the heavy metal 80s and during the peak of it all, Metallica rose up and conquered the thrash kingdom until literally 1990 when they came out with the Black Album and it was at that point I knew the end was near. Now years later and quite a few mediocre and softer albums later, the band that no one would play became the band that everyone played way too much. I began to loathe Metallica and every song they had. Even the truly thrashing anthems off of Master of Puppets and And Justice for All became something to make me cringe. Naturally, when I grew up with Metallica, I began to despise their after Black albums and their softer more commercial ways (except for a few notable exceptions). I began to yearn for a return to their former thrashing glory.
Death Magnetic is about the closest thing we had since. My oldest son who has become a regular heavy metal spaz got the album, burned him a copy on his MP3 player and threw the CD at me. I must say, some of his previous choices, I had no desire to listen to. I asked him here if Metallica was actually thrashing again and he said yes. I was intrigued.
The 1st time I listened, I felt it was so good to hear them thrash again, but I felt like something was missing. Yes, this truly is thrash, but some of the crunchiness has left for a more melodic and modern version of thrashing Metallica. As I listened to the album more and more, I went through a period where I didnt think I liked it very much. It was a more melodic and tuney thrash. It wasn't as angst filled. But I kept listening.
Make no mistake about it, this is a heavy album. I have now listened to the album going to and from work about 15 times now and I must say the album continues to grow on me. Its good stuff. But its like thrashing Metallica grown up. I kept telling myself this is weaker. But I keep listening and now the tunes are familiar and I find the little riffs in it. The runs that sound cool. There is plenty to feast on. There is only 10 songs, but the shortest is 5 minutes. Id say the average song is about 7 and 1/2 minutes.
Heard the one bonafide hit off of it on the radio? Think its weak? Well, thats a sample of what the rest of the album is like except the rest of the album does a better job of thrashing.
I think I have gotten to a point where I really like this album. Im hoping radio doesnt overkill it and make me hate this album too. I actually want to learn some of the songs on bass. I have a feeling this will be one of the harder albums for me to learn to play. But I certainly do want to try and learn some of these tunes.
Bottom line, I too got sick of Metallica. But this is fresh and reminds me what I used to like about them. For the time being, Im glad to see them back like they used to be.
3 out of 4 stars in my opinion
