I probably didn't realize it at the time and nobody seemed to talk about him back in the day either. But looking back, I have to feel like Keith Pollard was one of the most under-rated artists of the late 70's and early 80's. My biggest memories of Pollard is when he did a downright awesome job drawing one of my favorite comics, the Fantastic Four. The issues with the Skrulls around 204-206 are just kick ass! He also has drawn one of my most favorite versions of Spider-Man. I always felt like a lot of artist drew Spider-Man way too skinny. He almost looked silly to me when drawn by a lot of artists. Now it is true, Peter Parker was supposed to be small and not that big. Pollard drew Spider-Man where he wasn't that skinny but he at least had some meat on his bones and some muscles. After all, he is Spider-Man and I would think after the radio-active Spider deal and fighting baddies all the time, including a few heroes, I would think one would get a little bit buff. Pollard drew Spider-Man the way I thought he should look. At least me personally. He also drew a lot of kick ass Thor comics and they always looked interesting.
It's pretty amazing, but he almost completely disappeared from comics after being quite active for about 5 years. Anybody know what happened? He does have credits for Marvels Official Index of Comic Characters, Including some credits on a new version done in 2006. But I dont know if they just reprinted pictures he did in the 80's or what? All I know is the man just disappeared after doing great work for such a short period of time.
He may not be someone you remember as doing great works. But I'll tell you I can never remember him doing a bad job at anything either. I can honestly say I really liked his work.
I really think, at least in my personal humble opinion, that Keith Pollard was under-rated and I wish he received more applause for his work than he actually did. Who knows, maybe he would have done more. I sure wish he did.
