A lot of what Marvel is putting out now is already 3.99. DC is heading that way. That's why I buy older stuff. I don't mind paying more for that. I'm not subscribed to anything, so I never noticed the price changes.

You don't like new comics Moe? I guess I don't like the price. ;D It stops me from buying back issues. I prefer to buy the classics. So much stuff comes into favor and goes by the wayside, that I like the stuff that stands up over time.

I've been finding myself more and more interested in stuff put out by Avatar lately. In fact, I'd almost say that behind the big 2 of Marvel and DC, I'm probably looking at Avatar as my personal #3 comic publisher at the moment. I think I've been sampling stuff from just about all the companies and although most of it is hit and miss, I'm finding Avatar has been hitting a bit more than average. Not only that, I think their covers are more dynamic than most of the drivel put out by other publishers these days. Although most of their stuff seems to have more of a horror slant, they seem to be doing it better than most. I've been mainly picking up Crossed and Supergod and considering others when I see it. When I see their back issue solicitations, I find myself wanting certain books. Some may argue its all shock and no substance. I don't know. I just find they aren't staying a slave to house styles or other trends. The work just seems to be solid. A few years ago I picked up some of their books and thought they were so-so. I now think they have improved. I'm starting to consider myself a fan. I started this year with an open slate and gave everybody a chance. They seem to be the one sticking out.

I love AVATAR. they put out some very entertaining stuff. Crossed is the only title that I have not read a single issue of.
Everything Warren Ellis puts out for them is top notch. All of the William Gravel stuff beginning with Strange Kisses has been great. No Hero and Black Summer along with Supergod are a great trilogy of books that look at the Idea of superheroes or superhumans from a totally different angle.
Doktor Sleepless which sadly will not be finishing was a very cool puzzel of a book, and his current title -Captain Swing and the Electric Pirates of Cindery Island is also a very well thought out tale. Which as I discovered yesterday upon reading issue two, has ties to both GRAVEL and DOKTOR SLEEPLESS. Even though it takes place in a 19th century steampunk via electricity era.
also, Alan Moore is continueing his series ofLovecraftian books which started with The Courtyard and continued in Yuggoth Cultures with his new title NEONOMICON which is a fucked up bit of black magic Cthulu mythos horror that as you would expect from Alan Moore is filled with hidden imagery and things that make you go back and pore over each page after you finish.
Personally I would like to do some work for Avatar.

It was a really damn good book though. Black Summer and No Hero are excellent I don't get much into the Alan Moore stuff. Not just his Avatar stuff but all around. He doesn't get me going. Crossed wasn't bad. I'll wait for the new series to be collected then give it a try. I did order the 3-D hardcover. I think they had the horror books down when they had the rights to Friday the 13th, Elm Street and Texas Chainsaw. I wish they didn't lose the license to DC. I always look forward to when Previews comes out to see what they have coming up. They are my #1 Indy comic company.

I have been resistant to Avatar. I have bought from them in the past and only thought they were so-so, but they kept having things catching my eye. Having covers that weren't staring at me or looking like heroes taking shits kept me looking. I'll admit, I'm a bigger fan of superheroes and I'll admit shock and horror ain't exactly my #1 thing. But I like solid work that doesn't stay stuck in some kind of house style and boxed in where every panel has to look the same kinda way and so on. I want dynamics, not crap I've seen forever in the last 20 years. I've been picking their stuff up out of curiosity and by the fact the covers look better than most and when I sit down and read them, the ride isn't half bad and the art is certainly solid and not stuck in a rutt. I still prefer to see heroes and so on and I think I always will. But its okay to take a detour every now and then and just take a ride to the other side of comics. When I break from the super-hero habit, these comics seem better than the competition. I think they've been hitting a stride. They're legit and I'll keep buying if they keep it up. As a side note, I'll be kinda surprised if Photobucket doesn't take off this scan for being a violation of their policies. I ordered this book because I thought the cover was sick.

The art on that cover is better than what I see in most Marvel, DC, & Dark Horse books. I won't buy from Avatar ever since they turned Cavewoman & Medora into flat out porn. I don't forget. They also released a Warren Ellis book that I thought was crap. It's been a long time, but I have a good memory.

The reason Ellis is not producing any more Doktor Sleepless is because his computer got infected and it destroyed his hard drive. It had a ton of finished scripts for all of his projects at Avatar and at Marvel. It has caused release delays and more.
On the way home from work the other night i stopped into Atlantis Comics on Portsmouth Blvd. becaue that is the only place I have seen single issues of Crossed. I got lucky and they had the TPB of the first 8 issue story by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows. I took it home and started reading it and I honestly couldn't stop until I read the entire thing. It was brutal and at times genuinely scary. Ennis's story does this, but it is Burrows artwork that sells it. I will say it here and now, that Burrows is the best sequential artist working regularly in comics today. Sure he may not draw slick like Jim Lee or whoever, but Burrows has no stock faces or poses. All of his characters are consistent and look unique. every detail needed to convey a scene is not only present in every panel, but the detailing and composition are so good that you can believe you are there. His colorist helps a good deal to bring his stuff to life so he deserves some credit also.
I wasn't interested in reading the story before because the covers, as good as they are like the one above, just made me write it off as a shock comic. But its Ennis and he doesn't generally disappoint so...I am glad I took the chance. I need to check out the David Lapham stories now.
@defient 1: Ellis is awesome, but even he has a few misses. which book was it BTW, I am curious. As far as Cavewoman, I always saw that book as titilation comics anyway so if it went hardcore I am not suprised.

As far as Cavewoman, I always saw that book as titilation comics anyway so if it went hardcore I am not suprised. The Ellis comic was probably the first one he did for Avatar. I keep thinking it was like faust, which doesn't interest me in the least. Budd Root's stuff was 'fun' before he started doing the more adult theme for Avatar. The same is true of Medora which did showed topless, but nothing like what Avatar put out. Both were fun, sexy, and comical before Avatar just made it about T&A. Check out Cavewoman: Rain if you haven't already. It actually had an interesting story and I own some of the original art. df1
