How important are assistant coaches in the NFL? I think they're incredibly important. When Buddy Ryan was successful in Philedelphia his Defensive coordinator was Jeff Fischer. (sp?) When Ryan went to AZ he couldn't take Fischer with him. He wasn't nearly as successful. Tom Landry was a great coach in Dallas. He produced Mike Ditka, Mike Shannahan, and at least one other head coach from amongst his staff. When those guys went on to coach their own teams, Landry slipped. I will predict something here. I predict when Bill Cowher goes back to coaching he won't be nearly as successful unless he lucks out and gets some great assistants. Ken Whisenhunt and uss Grimm, his former assistants, and his strength and conditioning coach are all in AZ now, and are doing a great job.
