I know a lot of guys would rather have their comics buried with them than sell their comics, but there are still a good deal of collectors out there who don't mind selling their comics for profit every now and then. It may bring in some much needed extra cash or it may be used to collectively put together a decent wad of cash to get a comic of value you may not otherwise ever afford to purchase in life. Or you just cant justify it by spending your working cash flow on it but spending comic transaction money on it takes the guilt out of your big purchases.
But I also know from being in investments a few times in my life that one of the golden rules of investing in stocks is to never fall in love with your stock. Sometimes you may believe in your stock more than the actual price is telling you and you will continue to hold it when common sense is saying you should sell it. You keep thinking a better day will come. In essence, you've blinded yourself into loving your stock and you're holding onto a dud while all the smart money let go of it. Often times you never will see the price go back up. But you just cant seem to part with it.
Even though the principals are a bit different, could the same thing be true with you and comics? Do you sometimes feel you could sell some books but more often than not you're selling your least favorite comics and trying to hold onto your favorites. Even though your least favorites are very often everybody else's least favorites and your favorites are the ones that can actually make you some money. But you just cannot bring yourself to sell it. You've basically fallen in love with your book and you cant part. Does this happen to you? And maybe sometime later the love everyone had for it has passed and now your time to capitalize has passed and now you have a book you yourself used to love and everyone else did too and now no one does and maybe you dont feel the same about it either and maybe you should have divorced the book when the getting was good but you were just blinded by love???
I know its happened to me a lot of times. That's one thing I miss about when I used to do conventions. Basically my entire collection was for sale whether I loved the book or not. It had a price. As I got older and stopped doing conventions and did more of the ebay thing. Ive noticed Im trying to sell the unloved and the loved still remains. And opportunities come and go and Im holding on to the old flame that should have been a wham bam thank you maam a long time ago.
I've often heard a collector stops being a collector once they become a dealer. In other words, you'll never be a successful dealer if you hang on to being a collector. I think these days it's harder than ever for me to let go of the books I love where it used to be so easy for me. Just like in stocks, once I stop seeing the names of the stock and see the dollar signs instead, I do a better job with managing my money and my investments. And when I can do the same thing with comics, I'd probably do a better job with my books. Taking the love out would probably make me a better seller.
