When I was young, the big problem for me getting to a comic store was there was only 2 and both were a reasonable distance away. 1 was on the other side of town and one I never seen. The other had to be traveled by way of going through a tunnel to another city and it was directly on the other side. This is the one I was able to get to the most because occasionally you or one of your friends could talk a parent into taking you there.
But those days ended for me when the Trilogy shop opened just miles from my home. I could probably walk there in 45 minutes or ride a bike and be there in about 10-15. Very often I was there by way of bike. This was the Trilogy in Norfolk. It was great having a comic store close. This location was run by an owner who looked like the guy who always said "Inconceivable" in the movie, I think it was called Excalibur. If you know who always said "Inconceivable" you know who I am talking about. He generally kept quiet and didn't talk unless spoken to. Occasionally he might say "Can I help you?". Given a chance, he was okay, but certainly not the life of any party.
Within no time Trilogy had 4 shops and I think even briefly a 5th opened up. But over the years, it dropped down to two that I know of. The other is in Virginia Beach.
In any event, the deals at these 2 stores were seldom found. The Norfolk location was smaller and much cleaner and good to stop by for new issues or fairly new back issues. Back stock rarely to this day produced any highly desirable items. Prices so-so for new issues and downright high for anything of even low value. You have to scavenge to find anything worthwhile. I probably stop by about once ever 1-3 years.
The Virginia Beach location is somewhat bigger. Has a lot more backstock but is also a lot dirtier. Books of known importance were rarely worth getting here. Occasionally when a back issue suddenly was getting hot, you may have been able to sneak one by him before he realized it. Otherwise, prices were so-so to way off base. Because the selection tended to be a bit better, I probably stopped by over here about once a year. Sometimes more frequent. But rarely much about once ever 6 months. Selection generally decent in Va. Beach from Silver on up. Norfolk, late Bronze on up.
If you made your way over to our area, I would say try other stores 1st and visit these places only if your a die hard to visit every store you can. These should be towards the end of the list.
