Anybody care to share their thoughts on this pioneer in self-publishing?
I think he's great... definitely one of my inspirations for self-pubbing. His art is gorgeous, and his writing is (altho his later stuff has been panned) spot-on.
I even like a lot of his commentaries. I think he's gotten a bad rap by some of the more "mainstream" comics press (Wizard, ugh) but if you actually take the time to read what he says... and do so with an open mind, I think you'll find that a lot of what he says... not only makes sense, but has quite a bit of truth to it.
Misogynist or not... it's scary how when you put just a little bit of thought into what he's saying... it makes a whole bunch of sense.
He's not nearly the boogey-man that he's made out to be either. He's done interviews, which could be found on YouTube that are quite fun to watch. He's a ton more personable that you'd think if you didn't know too much about him.
That all being said... his presence certainly overshadows his work in a lot of cases, which is a shame. Cerebus (and to a lesser extent Glamourpuss) are really good comic stories that are worth your attention.

I've been meaning to respond to this thread for awhile and sorry I havent. I think I grew up being someone who wanted nothing to do with Cerebus and I pretty much was. But once I found out it was one long story destined to end at 300 I must admit my curiosity started growing for it. Another thing is I am the type who never likes being without a certain title or genre. So after awhile, I finally started picking some up. My main focus is on the 1st 100 issues. And while I don't have many, I'd say I have about 15, I can say that when I look through them I am surprised at how well done they seem for someone who self published. It is no wonder he received such acclaim. Anytime I glance and start reading, I instantly become interested. And the art is a lot more well done that I ever would have thought. When I finally get around to buying comics again you can rest assured that I will continue picking these up. If I ever get more than 50, I can safely say I may even accelerate my collecting of these. Right now, they just seem to be a comic I pick up here and there. But Ive went from buying out of a need I made up for myself to I just wouldn't mind owning more.
