I need to start by saying I think this place may have closed down. First of all, when you go out to Nags Head and all points south in that area, you are thankful to see any comic store at all. Because its otherwise beach related or a restaurant and that's it. I had to go that way for a family gathering in Rodanthe, NC which is about 30 miles past this store and as I was driving past the building which is a little L shaped shopping center with this store being the end store of the lower part of the L, I could see a "for lease" sign up next to the comic shop. I didn't stop to see if it was official. So until further notice, we'll have to wait for clarification.
Being the ONLY comic store within 70 miles doesn't make it a good store though. When you enter the store this is a store that feels cramped and swampy. The beginning of his store has the counter to the left as you walk in and his card area on a solid floor. As you walk further back you enter the back issues of comics as well as the new comic area. For such a swampy, cramped up space, he keeps it tidy enough, but there is just an overall mangy feel to the place. I remember I was there on a real cold day the last time I was in there and he didn't even have heat and everyone was wearing jackets. The back area which features back issues and new books also has a jacked up floor. Wooden and creaky, it almost seems like you are walking on palettes. As bad as this seems, this is not the worst of it...
The worst of it is looking through his back issues and realizing within 5 books that this guy is a rip off artist. Books you can find in any dumpster for $1 or less he has prices of $5 - $20 per book. And the occasional and very rare good book or key that can be found for say $8 - $20 elsewhere, he has ridiculous stupid prices of say $50 - $100. The guy also isn't very customer service worthy either. The last time I was in there he was eating a sub and looking like he was watching me like I was going to put one of his comic gems up my shirt. I remember I actually seen one book that I kind of wanted and wasn't seeing elsewhere. But the price was about double of what you'd expect. I remember bringing the book up to the guy and going "can you do anything on this?" and he said "That's the price if you want it". What a prick! I left that day not buying a thing.
About 3 years ago me and my wife got stuck in a family outing in April in a Summer Rental house with the rest of the family and it turned out to be a disaster of 50 degree weather and rain. Being there is nothing else to do in the area unless it is warm, I made my way to his store. Once again, same shit. It looked like not one back issue had sold. And the same prices appeared on the books. I didn't even ask for a break this time. Instead, I did the only thing I could do in a store like this. I bought new comics. About 10 of them. Just to have something to read and look at while I was bored out of my mind.
I have to say, if this store still exists, it would be the ONLY reason to go to this store. There is no other redeeming quality I can give this store. If you are just bored out of your mind and in the area and trapped, come here to buy new comics only.
P.S. No discounts on that either.
