Not often I can write a review because I rarely go to a movie, but we found a local theater that plays NEW movies for $4 regular price and $3 for any showing before 6pm. Yes, its a small town movie theater, but for the price, it was worth it and it was more than adequate. We seen Pixar's Walt Disney's Up.
I'm sure you've seen the previews as there has been tons of them over the last week. If you liked what you seen there, then the movie offered more of the same. Although obviously aimed at the youngest of audiences, the sometimes somber content and heart tugging storyline made for a story all ages can enjoy. Thankfully no sappy music to sit through and being Pixar, the animation was top notch.
Finding out the old guys story in the early stages of the movie could have you choking up for a few seconds in the beginning as the real life drama sequences are well done and draw you into caring for the lead character in a big way.
The kid takes a bit more to get into but once done, he is a great sidekick for the show. The real scene stealers are the animals. The bird turns out to be more amusing than the commercial. But clearly the dog steals the show! Actually the dog had me laughing many times. Other villainous dogs appear as well and even those are funny, but the lead dog is so instantly lovable, it will make you wanna go get one when you leave.
After a bit of a slow opening sequences and dealing with a mindset that is aimed for youngsters, these minor annoyances are the only real slight drawbacks I can give it. And hey, you know going in its for the kids. It's a true safe bet for them to see. Nothing harmless except some small time cartoon slapstick violence. There was literally dozens of kids in the show I went to and they were laughing throughout. But I found I laughed right along with them as well as a few other times the kids didn't. The show is just adult enough to let us in too.
I wouldn't say the movie totally blowed me away, it was about as I expected, but I did enjoy the movie thoroughly and I'd say its about as sure a bet as your going to get if you have any bit of funny bone or family movie in you at all. It's literally a can't miss. I left glad I went if not slightly underwhelmed, but still I cannot deny I thoroughly enjoyed laughing at that dog and other characters numerous times over. Unless you're just a cold hearted grinch. I'd highly recommend seeing it as long as you fully accept its maybe more for kids than you anticipated as well as expected going in.
I'd give it
3.5 out of 4.
