One thing I distinctly remember about going to Charlotte Con was how hot Deadpool was. For example, I only recall seeing 2 sellers selling New Mutants #98. One of them had it for $40 and I was tempted to ask them if they would accept $30, but I never did. This is one comic I used to have back in the day in multiples and now I have none. So now I feel a need to own a few and don't.
But what was even more shocking, was not so much the lack of #98's being offered (which to me seemed like either the dealers were holding onto them for later higher sales or they sell like hotcakes when they do offer them and they just didn't have them). The surprising part was how almost anything Deadpool was selling. ALL early appearances were selling big and at jacked up prices and these were the comics the dealers DID have and were displaying prominently. It was clear to me by just how many dealers had them on display and the amount of books that would normally have been dumpster material now fetching $10 - $20 status indicated the character was at this time scorching hot.
Which brings up a few questions. I've been seeing some amazing prices for #98.
Do you feel #98 has peaked or is the sky the limit with this book? Is this the next Amazing Spider-Man #300? Or is this book destined to be a $20 and less comic soon. I feel the #1 reason I don't have one is I never felt like paying the cash for it. I remember seeing them at $15 and not wanting to pay because I seen them so long at $8. And now I'd gladly pay $15 for one. But is that what the normal price will be soon or is $75 and up going to be more likely?
Which is the more likely to be the average price 2 years from now? $15 or $75
Secondly, the other appearances and 1st issues seem more risky to me and seem to have a shorter attention span. #1 issues in the Mini and Regular series seem like a short term spike. Am I wrong for feeling this way? Also it seems like 2nd to like 10th appearances are jumping on this character. Again, seems super risky to me that this would hold water very long as being high dollar (well $5 - $20) books.
Do you think the secondary early appearances in his own mini and regular series as well as the early 1st appearances (not including New Mutants #98) retain their value for more than a year? Or wait a year or two and they are back to $1-$4 status?
I'm just wondering out loud if this in your opinion is going to be one of the grail characters of the 90s or will his flame blow out before we know it and no one will care about him pretty soon?
