Machine Man aka Aaron Stack or X-51
1st Appearance 2001 A Space Odyssey #8
I don't know why I'm so fond of Machine Man. And at the same time I feel like I have so many reasons to love the character the way I do. 1st of all, in 1978, when I started collecting. My 1st comic book I ever purchased was X-Men #110 dated April 1978 (which I probably purchased it around January 1978). After reading that book 3 times straight, I went back to the 7-11 the next day in search of another comic book and walked out with the first 1st issue I would ever buy. Machine Man #1. So one reason I love it so much is because it was the 2nd comic book I ever purchased. I didn't realize how much I loved the character until many years or even decades later. For some reason, Machine Man had a perfect nostalgia to it that would always bring me back to my early days in comics.
Machine Man was pure fun to look at and read! It never took itself too seriously and yet, there was always a story that seemed kinda serious going on. Machine Man was awfully troubled and conflicted for a Machine. He always seemed like he was human. He didn't talk like a robot. He always seemed like a living breathing caring man. And yet, he was too damn cool too! Metallic ladders extending from his arms. Feet that became skateboards. Finger hole flame throwers. Arm length tank treads. Telescopic extending bionic eyes! And damn it, he wore that purple uniform about as well as a purple uniform could be worn! It wouldn't work for anybody else. It worked great for Machine Man!
Still yet, its hard for me to fathom that Machine Man was drawn by 3 Bona-fide Legends of comics! Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and Barry Windsor Smith!!!
I have to be honest. It wasn't the 2001 A Space Odyssey appearance that I thought were good. Quite the contrary. Although I feel that series was a good playground for Kirby and he did some nice work on it, it just wasn't on the same level as I felt Machine Man was. In fact, I consider the 1970s to be seriously declining years of Kirby's history. He walked into the decade The King of Comics and by the end of the 1970s, I felt his greatness was all but completely done. Kirby had a lot of great moments in my opinion during the 1970s. A lot of nice pieces. But it was always evident to me, it didn't live up to his peak years of the 1960s. Although Machine Man didn't either. I always felt like this was Kirby's LAST great run on drawing comics. No, its no where near his greatest work. But, it still has enough greatness to show off his talents. I never seen anything AFTER Machine Man that Kirby did, that I liked as much as Machine Man. It seemed all downhill after this series. He left Machine Man after 9 issues. Only to be replaced by another legend...Steve Ditko within a year.
I have to say I despised Ditkos work on Machine Man! It was so much less fun than what Kirby did! It was so watered down and plain. Gone was the great contraptions, villains and fights! But now many years later, I have grown fond of even Ditko's run on the series. My all-time favorite cover he did on Machine Man is #11. If this was Ditko of the 60's. I would have liked to have seen what he could have done.
Surprising, I never paid much attention to the BWS issues of Machine Man. Even though the art is probably far superior of all 3 artists, I don't think Barry could capture the Magic that Kirby had on it. Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm glad Machine Man is pretty much gone or whether I'd want him back. I would imagine if he was brought back, I'd be disappointed. The true magic of Machine Man was the original Machine Man #1-9 and especially #1-4. It would be hard to duplicate that feeling I get every time I see those issues again. I really don't think any one could do it justice. Sure, they could draw it a LOT better and maybe have him involved in a kick ass story too. But I doubt they could recapture what made Machine Man so cool in the 1st place.
One last thing, its amazing how much of a comedian Machine Man was. It seemed to have made him more human. I seen this funny scene where Machine Man gets in a cab driven by a black driver. Feeling he is a hostage to Machine Man because he has seen him depicted as a menace the taxi driver says "Oh how awful it is to be black and unlucky". To which Machine Man shows him his arm and says "Look friend, how would you like to have this skin and be a minority of 1?".....After that exchange, the taxi driver refers to Machine Man as a "brother".....
Priceless!
I gotta say....Machine Man kicked ass in my opinion!
