I went to see District 9 tonight.
I must say Im not a Sci-Fi buff in the least. I could care less about Star Wars or any and all types of Space and related movies before or since. Sure, I've seen a few and liked them, but its not something I geek out on and want to see time and time again.
I'm not sure what to say about District 9. I felt a big range of emotions about the movie in the first 30 minutes that I was sure I was going to dislike it by time it was done. The movie starts off almost like a TV Show Documentary and after 20 minutes or so, you wonder if it will ever turn into a movie and leave the documentary behind. Thankfully it does.
The premise is easy enough to follow. A large Alien Spaceship has been left abandoned by it's mother ship and has hovered over Johannesburg for the last 20 years showing no signs of life. After a brief period of time earth decides to go in and finds 1.8 million malnourished Aliens. Not knowing what to do, the government gives the Aliens shelter in what becomes known as District 9. However the relationship between the Aliens and the townspeople becomes strained along the way. Its finally decided that the Aliens need to be evicted and moved to an area 200 miles from civilization where they will be free to roam and not bother earthlings anymore. Now comes the part I felt was unbelievable. They have to serve the Aliens 24 hr eviction notices from their current "dwellings" so they can be moved to District 10. This is basically where the movie really begins.
I don't want to give away any more than that than to say that really once the eviction notices start, the real movie begins. And once a certain "event" takes place, the real drama begins.
At times I was repulsed by the Aliens, their surroundings and their ways. The movie in some crude way reminded me of my son's Halo games. Aliens are very reminiscent to the Aliens you would see in that game, but perhaps more gruesome. Amazingly, we can communicate with the Aliens, although they continue to speak their own language, Humans appear to understand what they are saying.
You spend a lot of time reading the dialogue. But I must admit, the longer I watched the more I was sucked in and enjoying the show. There is plenty of battles, gore and F-Bombs galore. The pace moves briskly and has very few slow moments. The slowest moments are the beginning. I had a range of emotions for a bit and about mid way through my reactions settled down and I figured I knew how I felt about everything. It just took me awhile to find it. Although I seen it with my teenage son and his friend and my wife, its a bit iffy for them (the boys) and certainly not for kiddies 12 and under. 13 and 14 like my boy and his friend was kinda pushing it. There was literally 1,000 F-Bombs throughout the movies and scenes which younger kids probably should not be exposed to. I didn't feel too bad about letting my boy see it, but if he would have been any younger, I would have been mortified.
The Aliens are very believable in look and action. And you discover as repulsive as they seem that they do have personalities and human characteristics. You can kind of see what the drama is leading up to before it is actually revealed, but I didn't mind too much. Not being my cup of tea, I don't know exactly what to rate it. Depending on who goes the reviews should range from pathetic to outstanding. While I don't think it was outstanding, I did enjoy it and thought it was good and entertaining. It just took a bit to get into.
Wasn't 100% happy with the ending, but it had to end somehow. Overall, I think it was a good show.
Depending on my mood I would rate it from 2.75 - 3.25 out of 4.
If you like Sci-Fi Alien type movies, you should go.
If you are unsure or so-so, you might enjoy it.
If Sci-Fi Alien type of movies aren't your bag.....don't go.
