Being I play bass, I have an appreciation for music. And my appreciation goes back through the decades. I find I love all forms of rock well back through the years all the way back into the 50s. Even though the music of the 60's is technically raw and in some cases basic to what transpires today, I find a unique love for the feel good early rock years of the 60s and bands like the Beatles.
Certainly my love for them tends to lean towards their heavier, hippie drug induced psychedelic years from about 1965-1970. But I also find an appreciation for their doo-wop teenie booper British Invasion "She loves you yeah-yeah-yeah" years. They have to be one of my top 5 favorite bands of the 60s. Certainly I find others heavier and maybe more rocking and head banging. I find few from that era as artistic.
I especially love their orchestra backed songs and albums. Sgt Peppers is an album I can listen to start to finish non-stop often.
What I love about the Beatles is their endless creativity. Each gifted with their instruments of choice. Each with melodic voices. Each full of imagination and no limits to their sound. True, their music at times have basic riffs and setups, they still always seem to find a way to inflect powerful segments into their pieces and change the mood of the music at a moments notice.
It seems almost a tragedy that they broke up in 1970 when technology in music was just starting to turn the corner. Each member continued making good and decent music afterwords in their solo careers and up to 2 of their members deaths. You could continue to feel their Beatles flavor until some of it started getting too commercialized during the 1980s. Even then, I found Johns son Julian to have his Dads vibe at music making.
Now nearly 40 years since they broke up, I find its good that their music is having a bit of a resurgence although Im sure just temporarily with the rerelease of their cds with new Digital remastering as well as a blockbuster video game on Rock Band. Its a game I personally would love to play because we already have Guitar Hero and its a hit in our house. And I can imagine strumming along to the Beatles could be just as enjoyable to me as strumming along to Metallica.
Far too often the younger generation has no appreciation for music that is well before their time. I never had this problem and neither did my friends growing up. But todays generation doesn't want to look back to the early glory days of rock. The metal birth years of the 1980s are about as far as they'll dare to venture. And even that can be a stretch for them. I find it good that a lot of youth may be introduced to a band like the Beatles through games like Rock Band. Otherwise, they may have never chosen to listen.
I'm sure a lot of people don't care for the Beatles (including my wife). But to me, they made good music and I love their entire history minus a few rare dud songs. Most of their stuff I can listen to over and over. Personally I'm glad they existed.
