news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091224/ap_en_ot/us_obit_james_gurleyI didn't know it until now, but I just read as posted in the above link that James Gurley, the former guitarist for Janis Joplin's Big Brother and the Holding Company died last Sunday. I know that 60's music often had a cheap and occasionally simplistic sound compared to the polished recordings of today, but this guy was a bit under rated. I recently got a new acoustic bass for Xmas and play along to music for at least an hour almost nightly. 1 of the songs on my playlist is "Piece of My Heart" which comes off rather crunchy, funky and heavy for back in those days. Combined with Joplin's wild soulful wailing, this makes for what I feel is a a great rock song. Every time it comes on on my playlist (I always have my playlist set to shuffle), it's one of the funnest tunes for me to play along to. When you really get into it, it can be a great sounding song. I'm really not much into Janis Joplin, although I do own an LP of this album, complete with Robert Crumb art on the cover! I do appreciate this era in rock and think this is one of those defining songs of the 60's. RIP James Gurley
