Particularly those in the mouth and connected to a tooth. Are annoying as hell.

I had a root canal awhile back. The pain leading up to the root canal was the 2nd most painful experience in my entire life. My advice is to avoid extremely severe pain.

I can probably say I have the worst mouth here. I've had more than my share of tooth and gum pain. I've had 2 or 3 root canals. I've had deep cleaning of the roots of my teeth which involved cutting open my gums, scraping them and stitching them back up. I have caps which involved whittling my teeth down to dowels. And I have a partial bridge which finally spared me from the most embarrassing time of my life.
I've went to dentists before with such bad tooth pain, I said "pull it out"! And they did. It can't hurt if it ain't no longer there. Anytime Ive had bad tooth pain, I'm all for mega-strength pain killers. And if I can't get those, it's Motrin and constant Ambusal just to try and survive. There have been times I have went through multiple tubes of the stuff in just days. Tooth pain is a pain that cannot be ignored and like DF1 said, I'd recommend not having it.

I guess my mother was saving money, but I rarely went to the dentist when I was little. I think I'm lucky that my teeth aren't worse. Today, parents are crazy if they don't go get the sealants and other preventative measures that are available for their kids today. Motrin is just Advil 200mg x 3. It's a 600mg tablet of Ibuprofen. If Motrin is all you need, just take three 200mg Advil tablets. I have Hydrocodone around the house. It's much nicer. df1

But I didn't always have Hydrocodone around the house either. If you ain't got REAL painkillers, you've got to go with the over the counter junk to try and at least calm it down a little. Motrin, Ibuprofen, Advil....all in the same vein here. These are pills meant more for body type pains than headaches. I wouldn't recommend Excedrine or Tylenol for tooth ache pain. Even still, the over the counter stuff is something your tooth just laughs at but agrees to calm down to a small degree sometimes if you keep swallowing them and dropping Ambusol on the hurting area. Trust me, when I get it real bad, I call my mom up and ask for REAL drugs. There have been times the pain put those to shame too. Sometimes you can wait it out. Sometimes you cant. Sometimes it hurts so bad, you have to see a dentist. They either cure what ails you or yank it if necessary. I've had both measures done. Like you, we didn't see the dentist much as kids. I wasn't as lucky as you. By my late 20's some of my teeth were rotting. In my mid 30's, I had a couple fall out. It was extremely embarrassing to wait the time I did to have a partial bridge put in. Going through the process to get it was just as bad, if not worse. But I have to admit, the moment I slapped those new couple of teeth in, I felt like a new man. I've been lucky since then to only have one really bad tooth with a big hole in it that sometimes acts up. Eventually I'll get it filled. Probably the next time it acts up. I'm finally at a point in my life where my teeth are better now than they were in my teens. It's been a very long and very painful process.

Studies are starting to show that poor dental health affects the entire body's immune system. They've also discovered that the mouth has an immune system all it's own that works independent from the rest.
I wish I could say my first root canal made things better. It didn't. I suffered another 2 years after they did their best shot at fixing it. The root of the tooth was too far back to x-ray, plus I got infected during the process. I'm not sure he got all the roots and I could taste nose rinses around my tooth if I used them. I think there was a hole in my sinus cavity.

Crikey, I think you win! Good news though. Infection's going away.
