Gil Kane was always kind of a unique artist in my opinion. He had a unique anatomy with twisting poses and muscles. He was also great at drawing hands. Its hard for me to pin point what is his greatest works. It is so vast, but unlike others, I dont know quite off hand what is his signature work that he is best known for. I do know that most of the time, he had covers and art I generally loved. There were still other times his work looked a bit lazy and rushed to me.
I dont know if its true or not and correct me if I am wrong, but I thought I heard he passed away a few years ago. If so, that would be sad. Again, please correct me if I am wrong. Also, what would you say is his greatest work(s)?

I did a search and found out he did indeed die in 2000 (wow, that long ago). Here's a piece that seems quite famous he did. Pretty sweet IMO. Love the background. Would love to own one of these.

Also, what would you say is his greatest work(s)? Let it be officially on record that I am not a fan of Gil Kane. I just don't care for most of his work. The work that doesn't bother me so much is his early/mid 60's DC work. Ironically, Gil Kane in interviews has said that his early DC work was not inked to his liking. To me that says that his style isn't for me. Regardless of my dislike for his style, he did specialize on some specific types of illustrations and he did those well. He is respected for his ability to draw dinosaurs. He drew them when he worked on KA-ZAR. He drew them for Topps when they had the various Jurrasic Park series'. He just did a pretty good job on them. I don't hate his art, I just got tired of it very quickly. There are some other 70's artists I feel the same way about. cfs

Well, that's the great thing about the Creators area. Its not intended that you like every individual listed. Heck, there will be some I eventually post that I dont really care about at all. My dream is to have a lot of creators on here eventually. The more the merrier. I would further love it if others eventually decided to create their own threads with their own creators. Id also like to add examples of works by individual creators.
It doesnt have to be I create the thread and someone agrees or disagrees and thats it. I know its wishful thinking, but these threads dont have to end. Heck, some of these artists are still putting out work today. May be appropriate to list new stuff here too.
Maybe one day....

I am surprised that you guys don't like him. He is one of my favorites, and I consider him to be the bset cover artist of the 70's. Also He is the reason for me at least that Green Lantern is such an awesome character.

There were times his style just didn't work for some characters. Or I felt his style at times was overbearing on the character. There was also other times I felt his style was watered down and not up to his usual stuff. He had a wide range of work and some of it was hit and miss. But when he hit, I always thought he was wow! I loved his twisting ways, I love his dynamic covers and I love his sense of anatomy. Yes, there is works that ain't all that. But, I'd rather see him than a lot of others I feel couldn't hold a candle to him.

The inking drowned out his style a little bit and I thought it improved the overall pieces. df1
