As an artist Chaykin's characters tend to look the same to me and for some weird reason that has never bothered me with his art. As a writer (and sometimes as a co-writer) he tends to be more noir than Frank Miller ever has been or ever will be.
Most of Chaykin's better or important work like American Flagg!, Black Kiss, Time 2, Power & Glory, The Midnight Men and Forever Maelstrom is from independent publishers, or creator owned deals with Marvel and DC (like the last two series I mentioned)
He also deconstructed or re-imagined characters and concepts like The Shadow and Blackhawk for DC back in 80s.
He co-created and co-wrote (and very under-rated IMHO) American Century for DC's Vertigo line.
Currently he's working on several projects for Marvel, he just finished writing Squadron Supreme series, and is currently writing and drawing a new Rawhide Kid mini-series for Marvel's Max Comics line. as well as overseeing new hardcovers and trades for American Flagg!, Black Kiss, and Power & Glory for Dynamite.
