Don't really get into baseball but so much. I love my Red Sox, but really I only keep one eye on them until maybe September and then I keep better attention to it. However, I couldn't help but feel bad for the pitcher who lost a perfect game on the most horrendous blown call in maybe major league history. There have only been 20 perfect games thrown ever and this kid just threw the 21st. In my mind, he threw a perfect game and completed it when he tagged 1st beating the runner. Instead, with 2 outs in the 9th inning and only needing one more out, when the picture beat the runner to first and completed the perfect game, the ump called the runner safe, basically taking him out of the record books and costing him probably the greatest achievement he would have ever had.
I have to say I admire the way the kid handled it. He could have freaked out and he basically took the high road. And not to be outdone, but the ump has since tearfully apologized to both the pitcher as well as to everyone he can possibly apologize to. He realizes and has admitted the grave mistake that he made.
The part that is maddening is even though it clearly is a perfect game and a blown call, baseball won't overturn the ruling even with the ump admitting he blew the call. I understand it will open a can of worms for future and maybe even past situations, but really none may have been more grave than this. What are the chances this kid will ever throw another perfect game? Virtually zero. The kid was completely robbed and baseball won't overturn it. I have to say this turned me off to baseball a bit because they won't give the kid what he justly deserves.
